N.Y. Gov. Sets Marriage Date

DAVID PATERSON X390 200907 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

New York governor David Paterson, a longtime supporter of same-sex marriage, is putting his money where his mouth is — by placing a marriage equality bill on the state senate's November 10 agenda.

Empire State Pride Agenda released a statement: “Marriage equality has been an issue Governor Paterson has long championed and we are thrilled he has called the state senate back to Albany next Tuesday and put the marriage equality bill on the agenda. We now expect that we will get the respectful debate and vote that we’ve been waiting for since June."

The statement continues, "We look forward to hearing our lives and our families debated on the Senate floor next Tuesday. It’s now time that each of the 62 state senators vote their conscience on this bill that has great implications for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in all parts of the state.”

Referendum 71 in Washington has all the rights and responsibilities as heterosexual marriage except it isn't called marriage. I really take issue with gay "leaders" being "marriage" Nazis while losing equal protection under the law to semantics. The passage of referendum 71 by Washington voters got virtually NO coverage in the advocate or the national media while everyone is bitching about Maine. DO we want equal protection or do we want to ally ourselves with the ball and chain institution. It turns out that even if gays get "married" they are still discriminated against for housing and employment among other things. I would prefer ENDA, repeal of DADT and civil unions with equal protection under the law rather than some antebellum Anglo Saxon Protestant concept of partnership.

To call the legal partnership between two men or two women anything other than "Marriage" is to shoot ourselves in the foot. The term "Marriage" is written into our legal system in so many places it comes with a legal meaning attached. Using "Marriage" would automatically include same-sex couples the same, and equal, rights it bestows upon opposite-sex couples. Defining the legal situation between two same-sex people in a different way defines us as different by default. Separate it not equal and it is not the same. In some ways we are different but in more numerous ways we are very similar. The ultimate question is are LGBT people human beings just like Non-LGBT people are? If the Answer is yes than all of us deserve the same civil and legal rights. Its time to dividing us. We are all Human beings.

Jews get married, muslims get married, catholics get married, atheist get married. They all get their marriage licenses at city hall. What the heck does religion have to do with it? Kudos to you, David Patterson. You're my hero!

Quite frankly, it doesn't matter what the bible says, as atheists get married already. We cannot have one institution for straight people, and another one for gay people. We already tried that sort of thing before in our history before, remember? Our relationships are no different than anyone elses, and they should be treated with the same dignity under the law, which includes the word marriage. Do you really want to tell the children of a gay couple that their parents are not worthy enough to warrant the same, universally accepted term for their relationship? No religion has a monopoly on the word "marriage." Churches can perform whatever ceremonies they want for straight couples, but "marriage" is now a social and government term, and ceased to be solely religious years ago. If some segments of society want to be uncomfortable with gay couples using the term "marriage," then fine, but that's not going to stop us from calling our relationships what they are -- marriages.

I think people would be more tolerate if it isn’t called “marriage” for gay people. Word “Marriage” has been for a longggg timeeee is between man and woman. Why do we fight to get a word “marriage”. If we call it “civil union” or “holy union” or even “living partner” or “partner in life” whatever you call it as long as we can get the same benefits in The State and Federal level and same protections like the word “marriage”, I think people would care less and would support it. I do not know why we stuck in the word “marriage”. Even the bible say marriage is not for everyone. If I am straight, I would feel unease too if gay people call it marriage. That’s why there are words called male, female, straight and gay just to distinct one another. It would be easier on the paper work if the question is “what is your status?” single, married, divorce, civil union or slut..I thought gay people are more creative than straight people. I thought they would come out with words like va va boom or entrechoquer or fondre, attache, liaison instead of “marriage”.

What?! A politician willing to do the right thing regardless of the consequences? Obviously someone didn't give him the Democratic memo. First you promise things, ANY thing and everything, then you get elected and do nothing so you can get re-elected and then you do nothing under pressure from those trying to be elected after you! I don't care why he's doing it, just that it's the right thing to do....and he IS doing it. Thank You. (Crossing my fingers until they bleed)

Yes, this Governor that has every obstacle against him and he's actually doing something, while the Democratic White House and a Democratic Congress are SOOOOOOOO helpless. This is obviously a political move but most politicians opt out of gay marriage even if they are politically desperate.
