Paterson Launches 2010 Campaign Ads

Paterson Adx390 (Screen grab) | Advocate.com

As New York governor David Paterson called state senators to session for a potential vote on marriage equality, he also took the unusual step of beginning to air campaign ads nearly one year before the 2010 gubernatorial election.

The two 30-second spots, reported by Liz Benjamin at the New York Daily News, began airing statewide on Friday. They position Paterson, who is legally blind, as an executive who dares to do the right thing in the name of the people of New York, often under trying circumstances.

One ad, called “Some Say,” seems to allude to reports in September that President Barack Obama wanted Paterson, who assumed office in March 2008 after Eliot Spitzer resigned in the midst of a prostitution scandal, to drop his bid for election because of chronically low approval ratings. The governor does not mention detractors by name in the ad.

Patterson does put us in a difficult situation, I would like to support him given how much promise he shows towards expanding gay rights in new York state, but with what he is doing to the state, will anyone want to live here any longer? As a state it has the largest population loss….our cities cannot afford that…im all for cutting the budget but at a certain point enough is enough

He has been placed in the position of dealing with the poor choices of our past leaders, in the wake of a serious economic crisis. Everyone is suffering. New Yorkers face an oppresive tax rate, high unemployment and wasteful spending which has finally caught up with us. Paterson is doing what should have been done years and years ago. The financial state of New York would have caused the entire state to go bankrupt. Amid all of that, he remains steadfast in granting civil rights to all New Yorkers. At least he isn't using the excuse that he has "more on his plate" to deal with, like Obama. He is able to multi-task, a true leader.

I have very mixed feelings about Patterson. He is clearly one of the few politicians who is a real friend to this community but he intends to gut the state budget which will have a profound effect on many people gay and straight alike. I do think he has been forced into this after years of New York politicians relying on the Wall Street cash cow which has shriveled up. That is hardly his fault. It just seems odd to me that ever since he has come out strong for gay marriage, he has been demonized by the press and undermined by corrupt democrats and republicans in the state legislature. If any body thinks that a Gov. Cuomo won't be cutting money from the state budget they are seriously deluded. And who knows where Cuomo stands on gay rights. I suspect alot of hot air just like his father.

A friend to the gay community maybe, but he's still trying to completely break the budget for the SUNY system, which quite frankly is a little more important to me at the moment than gay marriage here in New York. What good will it do me if I can get married to my currently non-existent boyfriend if I can't even finish school because his new policies have hiked tuition beyond my means and yet murdered my school's budget so badly that I lose my on campus job as well? We do have to remember that there's more at stake here than just gay issues as well. I think sometimes we forget that.

He proved to be a real friend of our community. No wonder Obama asked him no to run. Well President Obama, some people unlike you actually stand up for their principles. I wish Gov. Peterson to win and I thank him for what he does for us.
