NOM Puts New Jersey on Hit List

The antigay National Organization for Marriage, which provides significant financial backing to stall or repeal state-level marriage equality laws, has set its sights on New Jersey.

Marriage advocates are in a race against the clock -- and the opposition of the Trenton, N.J.–based National Organization for Marriage.

"New Jersey is at the very top of our list, and it's going to happen in the next few weeks if it happens at all," said Maggie Gallagher, the president of NOM, according to The Wall Street Journal. "They're doing it in a lame duck, because it's as far away from an election as possible."

Observers expect the Democrat-controlled legislature to take up a marriage equality bill in the lame duck session between now and January 19, when Chris Christie, a Republican who opposes marriage equality and has vowed to veto the bill, takes office. Last week, Christie defeated first-term incumbent Jon Corzine, a Democrat who has pledged to sign the bill.

There really needs to be a big protest in front of their offices. I'm sure their landlord would not be too happy about it. If I am correct, that location is in the center of Princeton, where there are plenty of students who would gladly get involved. Call up the TV stations, lets get hundreds or thousands of people to show up! Let's chase them out of every office they try to open. I am not taking this anymore, there needs to be civil disobedience. If they want to take away our rights, then we need to fight back and intimidate them. And where is the list of donors from Maine, why has that not been released yet? In the meantime, please email them and give them a piece of your mind, send them letters and call them, fax them. RRR, I totally agree with your comment. Why is it so hard for our so-called leaders to understand this. It isn't rocket science. Yet, they use the same failed ad program time after time. I think it is called thinking 'OUT OF THE BOX." Or does that make their hair hurt??

I keep seeing people fed up with our tactics in battling the liars and fear mongers such as NOM. However, I do not hear any particular suggestions about what to do specifically. The one thing I think we can do is place ads explaining how these groups lie to get what they want, present the proof, and make sure that (whatever states) public understands that these outsiders infiltrating their election process are really a hate based group no different than the KKK. This may sound strong, but it is the truth, and there is no reason we shouldn't publicly call out NOM and other similar hate groups for what they really are. So far I have heard no countering these group for what they are, only random opposition to what they say - if people understand these groups are based in antigay hate, and nothing more then people will be less likely to accept their bulls**t lies.

How many times do we have to lose before our brilliant leaders decide to be agressive and "in your face" with outfits like NOM? If someone would call our approach to-date the "pancy approach" I would agree. Sitting in a circle singing Kumbaya isn't going to win many elections. I would love to see an ad where our opposition is called liars and hypocrits and those labels justified. Just once!

Of course we can resort to name calling and witty remarks. We can complain how religions are funding these attacks on us, and politicians like Christie use their last moments of campaigning to malign us and win votes. When are we going to put these people on OUR hit list. When are we going to fight instead of try to fight back. We do need to take the offensive. We need to make phone calls, volunteer time, donate to organizations who actually take the offensive (do they exist?) and we need tro come out. It may sound trite to some of us, but to others it is still life changing. We need to use every means possible to secure the equality our forefathers promised to all Americans. Afraid we will stoop to THEIR level? So - their level is what is winning. Good manners and moral high roads will not get us equality. Every one of us needs to make a promise to do one thing every day, week or month to change the course, to change minds, to get us equal treatment. We're supposed to be creative.

NOM and Maggie Gallagher are frauds. They are wasting millions of dollars with their lies and scare tactics. Despite their crusades against decent citizens trying to live honest lives, the rest of the country sees the truth, that there is nothing wrong with gay marriage. I look forward to they day when their whole organization falls and society will treat them like the hate filled bigots that they are. You want a fight in NJ? BRING IT ON DOUCHEBAGS!
