Iowans Working to End Gay Marriage

IOWA CHRISTIAN ALLIANCE X390 (GETTY AND LOGO) | ADVOCATE.COM

Iowa conservative leaders are promising to make gay marriage a central issue in next year's election.

Iowa Christian Alliance president Steve Scheffler says his group will focus on the legislative session beginning in January, lobbying lawmakers to begin the process of amending the state constitution to ban gay marriage, reports the Associated Press.

Scheffler said his group would recruit and finance opponents to run against legislators who do not support overturning the 2009 state supreme court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.

The issue of marriage equality has come up in the state’s impending 2010 governor's race as well. Currently all Republican gubernatorial candidates oppose same-sex marriage.

Businessman Bob Vander Plaats declared he would issue an executive order repealing marriage equality if elected, although current state officials say this move would be illegal. Another gubernatorial candidate, state senator Jerry Behn, believes the Iowa supreme court was out of line in overturning a previous ban on same-sex marriage and advocates removing three justices who participated in the decision when they come up for a retention vote next year.

I agree with you Chung Fang, state by state fight did not and will not work, also if we had focused on civil unions instead the word marriage, we would had our rights long time ago. we need federaly recognized civil union, that will give us same rights and benefits like hetero have and that is it.

We can do the best we can to obtain the legal rights as heterosexual couples, but not just state rights. Federal rights are more important the state rights. Yes, the conservatives have had an eye on us about state gay marriage, and they have been very successful in overturning state gay marriage because they know we are out numbered by public's opinion. All they need to do is lie a bit and exaggerate a bit, and they win. I am all for equal rights for gay, but there is a limit of how much we want to be like heterosexual couples, but what we can do is fight for FEDERAL, i mean FEDERAL recognition of our relationship instead of wanting gay marriage right away. I don't know how it works in IOWA in terms of the referendum, but mark my word, if they are able to gain signatures and put the measure on the ballots, they will win again just like Maine and California. Maybe it is time to shift our strategy and spend some energy on the repealing of DOMA now and fuck the state gay marriage.

You know why we keep losing the battle of gay marriage? Because it is simple, the majority of people in this country are not ready for this new concept. The whole gay community and most of you are headed in the wrong direction anyway. Our wanting gay marriage right away is the whole problem that we keep keep being defeated. We forgot there is more important things in terms of gay rights and equality, and that is the federal benefits and rights. To want gay marriage right away is just a political suicide. We should worry about the term later even though if we are separate but equal, and also, it is not just Christians who are against us, they are the mass majority of people who do not yet feel comfortable enough to see the same sex couples wad. Why keep trying to making a point and live in a heterosexual paradigm and format?

Some Christians may support marriage equality you may say? Well most do not!E They are the reason why gay people are treated as second class citizens in this USA.

Mark, some Christians support marriage equality. The Iowa "Christian" Alliance is only one small political action group, and in my opinion they're not very Christian.

I 've been saying for a long time, if the Christian fundamentalists start a drive to ban same gender marriage, we should start a petition drive to ban remarriage of divorced people.

Let's start asking these candidates on their stand on divorce. Jesus said that if anyone divorces and remarries, they are committing adultery. If these candidates stand for traditional values, they should also oppose the remarriage of divorced people, since Jesus was very specific about that (while he didn't mention homosexuality at all).

Wow! Imagine electing a state official for one solitary issue amonst the many issues that occur in the state, and not even one that affects the people of that state in any way - except perhaps to bring in more money and commerce. I'm sure someone who's sole qualification is the promise of minority oppression will be the best candidate to officiate over every other state issue. good luck Iowa!
