Lawmaker: Necrophilia a Sexual Orientation

Steve Russellx180 | Advocate.com

An Oklahoma state senator who intends to propose a bill  that would allow his state to opt out of the newly amended federal hate-crimes law says the statute contains language so vague that the definition of sexual orientation could be “extended to extremes like necrophilia.”

State senator Steve Russell, a Republican from Oklahoma City, claims that the new law oversteps the bounds of the federal government and impedes freedom of religion and speech, according to The Oklahoma Daily.

“The federal government should not be creating a special class of people, and that is just what they did when they passed and signed this bill,” said Russell, the Daily reported. “All crimes against another person have some level of hate in them, and people can be assured that our laws that protect people against crimes such as murder are sufficient to protect everyone.”

Russell also assailed the newly amended law for being “vague,” according to the Daily.

“The law is very vague to begin with,” said Russell. “Sexual orientation is a very vague word that could be extended to extremes like necrophilia.”

Necrophilia is defined as the sexual attraction to corpses.

According to Russell, his state could opt out of the law on the basis of the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Remember, Oklahoma is the state in which a state Representative stated that gays are "as dangerous to the United States as terrorists or Muslims." We were the "reddest" state in the 2008 election. From our populist origins in the early 1900's, we have become the most conservative state in the nation. Those of us who favor respect, dignity, and autonomy for all citizens--of whatever sexual orientation--fight the battle daily. This representative's proposal is nothing new. Anyone care to help?

Frankly, I love these types of comments. I recommend that he keep them up. Every time a comment like this comes out it paints those who oppose equality rights as extremist and out-of-touch with reality. The honourable Senator's assertion is so offensive and bizarre that those who are on the fence (or perhaps who have just hopped over the fence onto his side) won't want to be associated with those types of comments. If only we can get those types of comments in the spotlight, people may realise how skewed amd offensive this debate has become. Of course, there will always be a core who will oppose quality rights. But if we can keep them making comments like this, they will look increasingly foolish and radicalised.

Hey Steve, you and your ilk are sick sob's to be comparing those of us who are gay with the likes of having sex with dead people. My goodness man, how low can you go? You and those like you need to clean out your minds. How disgusting!!! And what's really scary is that most of you (maybe all) are actually populating this world with brainwashed kids. Oh my goodness.

Oklahoma was, of course, one of the states most active in discriminating against people who weren't white and was prominently featured in a number of landmark court cases on discrimination in education -- on the losing side. Oklahoma's laws on miscegenation were among those overturned by Loving v. Virginia. Guess what, loser. There were no "opt-out" provisions for civil rights laws then, and there still aren't any now.

I agree... what a tool... although from looking at him, he should be happy about necrophilia, otherwise who else would want to have sex with him?

States can, in fact, opt out of this law, as they can with many other laws that are issued by the Fed. But it would mean that they lose Federal money, so it's not likely to happen. I have to say that comparing gays to necrophiliacs is a new one to me. I guess they've played out the polygamy and bestiality canards. Look for it to crop up alot in future anti-gay rhetoric.

Wow, I am really glad that the Advocate explained what necrophylia is (I can't even spell it, nor knew what it meant). It takes a sick mind to think that one up just to try to make it ok for Oklahomans to continue to protect the rights of its citizens to carry out hate crimes against anyone what that is not a straight white person.

This man clearly has a case of cranial-rectum insertion. How do you simply "opt out" of adhering to the federal law? I wasn't aware it was optional.
