Oldest Gay Bar in Western U.S. Gone?

RC Lounge Fair Use | Advocate.com

Salt Lake City's Radio City Lounge claimed to be the oldest gay bar in the western United States — until it was torn down a few weeks ago.

Towleroad tracked down the story, reported by Salt Lake City's Fox 13.

Losing this place must be hard for a lot of people. For the sake of accuracy, however, I believe that the "Double Header" in Seattle was a gay bar for a lot longer than this one was, so I think "oldest in the West" is not true.

I came out in SLC in the early 80s, and RC was one of the few places gays had to gather. Even though I left the state 20 years ago, I'm sorry to hear about RC's demise.

This makes me sad. I used to go there from time to time, back in the day. It was just a dive, but I still had fun with my friends there. The gay scene in SLC just isn't what it used to be, especially since The Sun is no longer there.

Farewell "RC". We'll miss you. You were really a dive but tons of fun. Just a stone's throw from the Mormon Temple, you stuck in the craw of the "holier-than-thou's" for over half a century. I know many of your patrons had frequented both venues. Your weekly beer bust (was it Tuesday night or Wednesday night?) was the best. Your back entry may have been for surreptitious entry, but it was also great for catching a breath of cool crisp winter air after puking so I could go back in and ask for more. Farewell RC.
