Kelsey Grammer Stars in La Cage aux Folles

KELSYE GRAMMER X 390 (GETTY)

Actor Kelsey Grammer will star in the Broadway revival of Jerry Herman’s drag musical La Cage aux Folles, reports the New York Post. The Emmy award-winning star of long-running sitcoms Cheers and Frasier will portray Georges, a nightclub proprietor, opposite British actor Douglas Hodge as Albin, his high-strung drag-performing lover. The musical, noted for introducing the gay anthem “I Am What I Am,” is expected to open in April.

To be fair, being a conservative does not preclude one from being in support of gay rights. But I haven't heard anything from Grammar in one way or another in terms of equal rights, so I really can't say.

How many times are they going to revive this show? Wasn't it just recently (somewhere in the last 5 years) brought back?

It feels like Grammar wants to have it both ways: on one hand, he's made his name on some very gay-friendly entertainment ventures ("Frasier" had two openly gay actors in its recurring cast, along with David Hyde Pierce, who came out later, and the show frequently dealt with gay issues in a thoughtful and fun manner), but Grammar's staunch support for conservative politics puts him in league with many of those who have done the most to try and keep gays from their rights and being treated decently. Grammar's also recently appeared in films like the conservative comedy flop "An American Carol" which had cheap shots at gay rights. After two failed sitcoms in a row and a number of movie failures, Grammar's career is in the toilet, and one of the reasons is likely because he's lost touch with what was and should be a part of his natural fan base. "Frasier" was not a show that seemed geared toward the Limbaugh set, nor has much of Grammar's acting career. He needs to find his conscience

I am pleased that the show is being revived. It has some great music. Grammer is a talented actor. But he seems somewhat of an odd selection given that his conservative Republican politics are in conflict with the play's theme. His Frasier "brother, David Hyde Pierce, would be a more appropriate casting!
