Marriages in Mexico City?

MEXICO CITY PRIDE X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

A lawmaker has proposed changing Mexico City's laws to extend marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples.

David Razu's bill will be reviewed by a committee for the city council on Tuesday. According to the Associated Press, there has not been an official date set for a vote, but he expects legislative action by the end of the year.

“We only want everyone treated equally under the law, there is no intention to violate anyone's rights, this simply acknowledges the rights of one social sector with no detriment to another,” he said, reported Agence France-Presse.

Mexico City's legislature is run by the liberal Democratic Revolutionary Party, which has legalized abortion and, two years ago, civil unions, despite the opposition of the Roman Catholic Church and other conservative groups.

This is exciting news, it may not be in a whole retrospect but its worthy of merit. How many times is Mexico referred to as a third world country...ugh! Some may argue its just a small step, small scratch but its the move that begins change. I'm proud to be Mexican. VIVA MEXICO!!!

Hello: Hmmmm Davna, are you actually Mexican and living in Mexico... Its a rhetorical question, please dont answer. Mexico City is the capital district. A state basically. Its the same as having marriage rights in Massachusets. It does not do a damn thing for anyone else in the country. Under Mexican law Mexico City or "DF" is actually treated a little differently. Its is by far the most liberal place in Mexico, quiet possibly all latin America, but having marriage rights only there does nothing for the rest of the country. Supposedly there is a law in Mexico that one state must abide by the laws of another state, but its garbage and for some reason does not apply. Oh.... try a law suit in mexico.. hahaha thats a 15 year joke right........ If I lived in DF I would be happy about this, unfortunately I dont, and it wont have any effect on me nor any of the other 100 million people outside of DF.

Yes. The Mexican government has held a clear stance against religiously bigoted groups of misinformation for quite some time now. Unlike the majority of the United States, Mexican rulers care more about a healthy rule of law than the continuous flow of populist ass-licking and the addiction to easily embraced and conceived popular "values".

That is why I am proud to be Mexican and been born in Mexico City. Come on Mexico, yes we can.
