Puerto Rican Mother Mourns Gay Son

Footage from the funeral of Jorge Steven López Mercado in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, on Monday shows his grief-stricken mother remembering the moment she accepted her son as gay.

According to a translation provided by the blogger Blabbeando, Myriam Mercado recalls the moment an emotionally upset Steven told her he was gay.

“Aw, son ... if I loved you, now I will love you more,” she said.

Steven’s body was found decapitated and partially burned alongside a road in central Puerto Rico on November 13. A suspect, Juan Martinez Matos, was apprehended and charged with first-degree murder, but it remains unclear whether the murder will be prosecuted as a hate crime.

Michael Lavers at Edge reports more on the funeral.

    Comment:

What a nightmare this must be for Jorge's family. At least they can say that they loved and accepted him while he was still alive. Many of us go our entire lives without real family. And even at a time of such intense loss, his mother is strong enough to speak from the heart on the broader issue for the common good. She is a great mother. Oh, and the priest can cool it with all that brainwashing forgiveness crap. Now isn't the time. Once the asshole who did this is locked up, and the key thrown away, we can start talking about forgiveness. If you really want to be helpful, Father, start acknowledging that the hateful rhetoric your church has been spewing for centuries is partly responsible for this tragedy.
