Jake Gyllenhaal on Merkins

As the love interest for Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming film Love and Other Drugs, Anne Hathaway got to live the dreams of many by rolling in the (pretend) hay with the 28-year-old actor. But on the Thursday night episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Gyllenhaal admitted something came in between him and Hathaway.

“We were pretty much naked except for a merkin,” Gyllenhaal told Kimmel. “A merkin is not to be confused with what prostitutes used to wear when they shaved their pubic hair in the 16th century. I learned that from Wikipedia."

According to Gyllenhaal, Renaissance-age hookers shaved off their pubic hair over fear of crabs, so they used merkins to appear hirstute in their nether regions. “So, when I told people I would wear merkins they would look at me rather oddly because they thought that I had no pubic hair, or maybe I had crabs," Gyllenhaal said. "I’ll leave that up to you to decide.”

Gyllenhaal says his merkin was more of a male pastie: “It’s a cover for your junk."
