LGBT activists in Ireland are opposing the country’s proposed civil unions bill because they say it doesn’t do enough to protect children and characterizes gays and lesbians as second-class citizens.
“The bill is clearly a stepping stone but does not go far enough,” political commentator and election adviser Robert Cassidy said in a statement. “It has failed to address the rights of the child within a civil partnership as described with the bill and that is a major flaw.”
MarrigEquality director Moninne Griffith takes her opposition to the proposed bill a step further.
“Civil partnership without the option to marry sends a clear message out to the public that the government do not consider gay and lesbian relationships to be equal,” she says.
