Gately Widower Files Columnist Complaint

The civil partner of deceased British singer Stephen Gately (pictured) has filed a formal complaint about Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir, who called the circumstances of his death “sleazy” and criticized same-sex partnerships in an article published one day before the funeral.

According to The Guardian, widower Andrew Cowles “complained through his solicitors, Mishcon de Reya, citing breaches of accuracy, intrusion into grief or shock and discrimination.”

Gately, a singer for Boyzone, died while on vacation in Majorca in October. The cause was a buildup of fluid on his lungs, which investigators ruled was due to natural causes.

The U.K.'s Press Complaints Commission received 25,000 complaints from the public, according to TheGuardian, but Cowles is the first person directly affected by the article to complain.

Moir denied that her article, headlined “A Strange, Lonely and Troubling Death,” struck a homophobic tone. She was called the Stonewall Bigot of the Year as a result of her work.

I want to see Stonewall Bigot of the Year and also Homophobic Lie of the Year. This would let us showcase the falseness of many of the claims made against us - claims that the media report, unchallenged, again and again. For one thing, I think a majority in the US would support marriage equality if not for lies like "This will cause homosexuality to be taught in the schools" and "marriage has been a union of a man and a woman in all cultures for 2,000 years." The Lie of the Year would be a specific quote made by a publicly influential figure, such as Maggie Gallagher. It could be expressed or implied, but it would have to convey information that is demonstrably false. And runners-up will let us showcase several different lies.

I believe Stephen Gately was born in Ireland, which would make him IRISH----not British. Doesn't ANYBODY fact check these Advocate articles?

I like this idea. Who can run with it? Not HRC as they're in the back pocket of too many people who are bigoted against the gay community. Maggie, Brian, Rick - the list and the possibilities are endless!

Regarding RRR's comments - perhaps there need to be several categories for Stonewall Bigot of the Year, such as the Academy Awards have. With so many different types of bigots, it becomes important to categorize them. A list of nominees before the losers are named would single out the major gay hate people and/or group (see, two categories right there,) and would get a lot of attention in the media and would remind or let people know who the greatest haters of LGBT people are. If only some organization would take this up.

Love "Stonewal Bigot of the Year". Why don't we have that her in the U.S.? Of course, there there would be many nominees, but hands down Maggie Gallagher should win for U.S. Stoneewall Bigot of the Year.
