Parent Files Complaint Against Gay Teacher for Corrupting Child’s Innocence

GUINEA PIGS X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

A woman identifying herself as a Washington, D.C., parent took to the conservative P-Fox blog to announce that she had filed a complaint against her daughter’s teacher over the loss of the “child’s sense of innocence.” What exactly did the teacher do? Announce to her first-grade class that she was marrying a woman.

Margaret C. Hemenway posted the entry to the Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays website this week. In her post she writes: “Our first-grader astonished her father at the end of the past school year as he dropped her off at our local Washington DC public school, Horace Mann Elementary, where he had attended school in the early 60s. She relayed to him that her teacher announced her impending marriage — to another woman — to the class. Following her revelation, this teacher encouraged questions from the children.

“Our daughter also mentioned a book the teacher read aloud, ‘Uncle Bobby’s Wedding,’ about two male ‘gay’ guinea pigs, promoted by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender Lobby for children. Since homosexual activists cannot reproduce their own children, recruitment to their cause (especially at a young age, before parents have raised such sensitive and controversial topics with their children) is essential to the political agenda of promoting homosexuality and ‘gay’ marriage.”

Hemenway said she filed a complaint with the chancellor of her daughter’s school and is awaiting a response.

"GE. You've made a large assumption as to the motive of the teacher for which you have no basis" The basis is her actions. Straights do not need to announce the sex of the partner, and this teacher like all others do, because they have a need for acceptance from children. Plain and simple. She could announce it on tv, newspapers, etc which will have more a positive effect on the community at large. But why do we call it bravery when teachers like her announce they are marrying a person of the same sex to the classroom. That is not bravery that is cowardice. I announced my wedding in the newspaper, no fuss, even the homeowners assoc. announced it on their news letters, and people were very happy for us. But this wasn't because I needed acceptance, I did it because I am in love. Bravery? Not a chance. If she would have saved her class from a scathing fire and risked her life then that would be something worth mentioning.

File this one under absurd. (Insert derisive snort here)....The teacher was getting married and I doubt that there would have been any objections had said teacher been marrying Tom, Dick or Harry ergo what is good for the goose is EQUALLY as good for the gander. The brainlessness and spinelessness that it takes to advocated LYING about who one truly is goes beyond my ability to grasp. Peoples' discomfiture with the truth isnt the truth-tellers' problem its the liars'. One CANNOT cater to the sensibilities of racists or bigots. You either believe in Equality or you don't.

GE. You've made a large assumption as to the motive of the teacher for which you have no basis. You're assuming that her goal in annoucning her marriage--as almost every other teacher would--is to get the acceptance of children because she can't get that from straight adults. My guess is that if she didn't have some support coming from somehwere A. She wouldn't be getting married and B. She wouldn't have the guts to be so open with her marriage. The analogy you made about the religious dude (what was his name?) isn't the same. Her marriage to another women demeans or belittles no one. A homophobic tirade based on some weird interpretation of the bible absoutley does. What the previous teenager said is still accurate. With sexual orientation, parents are not always the best (and often the most dangerous) people to approach. If we want marriage--or any other right really--our lives have to be out, open and honest. This wasn't about indoctrination.

"Do you think they will really accept you if you'll accept being less equal?" -- Equal to what? Whom? I thought we were all different, heck I even had to attend a "diversity" class mandated by Phoenix Airport management for those doing business at the Airport. No you have it all wrong. Just by reading your whiny comment you have assumed that gays are un-equal and inferior already according to your logic which is that only through "equality," that is a social construct created by the gay left ten years ago, that one will be a whole "equal" human being. So in other words gays are naturally inferior. See how stupid all of this is sounding. Especially your comment, which is nothing but stupidity and insulting to the average gay person with modest intellect. Look, for the last freaking time: I am fine with being gay! I had a gay wedding three years ago, the whole works... I didn't do it because I wanted to challenge the world or feel "accepted", I did it because I am in love.

Good observation Dante, I don't think everything turned-out so well with our GOP elephant either (who is being uncharacteristically quiet now). Its kind of pathetic that he's trying so hard to appease the right wing homophobes who are going to despise him no matter what he does. He's right about working within the system though; political action is the way to get results, but licking the haters' boots won't do much good. I prefer shoving our own boot up their ass every time they deny us our human rights. The fundies will never like us, or change their idiotic beliefs, and that's fine with me as long as we get equal rights. In what part of Chicago is your crib? I lived in the Edgewater neighborhood while a university student. Should have moved to Boystown but was still trying to suppress my gay side at that time.

"I don't think anyone can read GayElephant's posts and agree that "everything turned out fine" for that twisted self-hating piece of work" --. Self hatred? I'm not the one that needs acceptance or validity from children. Unlike most of you, I accept my sexual orientation as is without the approval of children. Gee can teachers grow some balls and convince adults? Nope, they go after children. I'm not saying that it is immoral, I'm saying it is stupid, pathetic, and mostly weak trying to fabricate pity from school kids. And this whole straight marriage vs. gay marriage debate in the classroom, bottom line -- straight people are not making their marriages an issue because they are not the ones seeking acceptance of their lifestyle from children as oppose to gay teachers.

(Uh, well: "That is what I did, and everything turned out fine." I don't think anyone can read GayElephant's posts and agree that "everything turned out fine" for that twisted self-hating piece of work.) But aside from the nut-cases, anyone who thinks elementary school teachers don't discuss aspects of their personal lives has never spent any time in a classroom. Teacher's constantly present information that humanizes themselves in the eyes of students, because it helps students see the teacher as someone who they can relate to and be understood by. It's completely appropriate for a teacher to mention an upcoming wedding. Sexual activity? No. Social structures? Absolutely. This mom isn't pissed because she considers marriage an "adult" subject, she's pissed because she hates gay people and believes the vile ex-gay and "recruitment" dogma of the lunatic right. We must behave as if we know our relationships and lives are JUST AS valid, acceptable and important as hetero ones.

Hey Pachyderm, why do you always assume a double standard? The teacher's wrong to mention her marriage because the kids can't "fully grasp" SSM; but if hetero teachers mention their marriages, you're not troubled that those kids can't fully grasp OSM. You wonder what this teacher "expects" of the kids, but not what hetero teachers expect. It is indoctrination when LGBT teachers mention their personal lives; but its just normal education when hetero teachers do the same. GayElephant, I have to wonder if maybe YOU have been indoctrinated to stay out of sight, or keep a low profile because you are somehow less worthy, or deserve to be treated with less dignity, or that being gay is somehow shameful, or immoral, or disgusting. Do you think they will really accept you if you'll accept being less equal? If you'll agree to the back of the bus as your rightful place? If you ask only for scraps from the table of life? They won't! Here's a new indoctrination for you Pachyderm: EQUAL means EQUAL!
