High Court Blocks Prop. 8 Broadcast

The U.S. Supreme Court is blocking broadcast of the federal Proposition 8 trial, at least for the first few days, the Associated Press reports.

The trial is under way in U.S. district court San Francisco this morning. Although cameras will be allowed in the courtroom, the high court will block the planned broadcast of the footage on YouTube until Wednesday.

Opponents of the broadcast argued that witness testimony might be affected if cameras are allowed in the courtroom.

Vaughn R. Walker, chief judge of the court where the suit is being heard, said the more than 130,000 public comments were overwhelmingly in favor of the trial being broadcast. Only 32 comments opposed the broadcast.

The Supreme Court justices also said they would not allow real-time streaming that would permit the trial to be seen in other federal courthouses.

The Advocate will be covering today’s testimony with live updates via Twitter.

There's got to be a list of contributors against us for Prop 8. BOYCOTT & DISASSOCIATE from those products to help your Gay Brothers & Sisters here. We're here fighting for OUR rights to make OUR home a better place for us & you to visit. Win or lose, we won't be forced out of Beautiful CA. Remember the fact that A LOT but not all trends start or are tried 1st in CA & the rest of the country then follows CA's success & maybe most of the rest of the US will follow. Everyone owns Flip Flops & Everyone Talks to Everyone (Amy Poler SNL). We love people who visit especially us who have moved here from other states. So those of you who just seem to blame CA for everything - just know that we would never do the same to you. I am more worried about losing the "Civil Rights" we already have like what almost happened in the state of WA (My other home). If it is just about a stupid work like "MARRIAGE", just let them have it. That would make my smile as Big as TX. ;-)

The Supreme Court has just done a great injustice to the US, which tries to make its image abroad of a democratic society where everyone has access to the court systems which are open and not hidden by closed doors. It is bad enough that the US relies on the Grand Jury Sytem which is held behind closed doors and in secret, now they are saying a very important trial which calls into question one states behaviour under the constitution should not be seen by Americans as a whole. When justice is held in secret then Democracy has been defeated. The Pro * people's argument that they are afraid of retribution, are showing what dictators and other repressive regimes do when they are ashamed of the actions they have taken. If these people are so sure of the stance they hav taken then they should stand up to the light of the sun and be judged accordingly. As far as a possible boycott of their products, I hate to tell them I and my friends already boycott all products produced in California.

Scott - not sure I have the wherewithal to get a profesional reading done. That being said I did some digging and think I've found a rough transcript over on firedoglake, I linked to the post where the opening statements are being made, http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/23357 Though so far the pro-8 side haven't had any of their witnesses up & I think we all know most of the parts that would be revealing would come from them though their attorney stating that he didn't know of any specific harm same-sex marriage could pose to hetero couples.

Dave contact Dustin Lance Black. See if he can get Harvey Fienstein, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Robin Williams et al to do the dramatics. To do such a thing would grab mainstream media attention in no time.

I maintain we should start posting dramatic readings of the transcripts of the trial on youtube.

How can this be in a democratic country trying to spread democracy throughout the world? This is ridiculous. Heterosexual judges making all of the decisions about the equal treatment of a large minority. This is just plain unfair. Hell should be paid for this across the country. We can no longer be the nice, patient little gays who should stay in their place.

The trial is expected to take two to three weeks. How much you want to bet the Supreme Court doesn't make their decision before it ends? We saw this same behavior in Washington state last year with the petition count. The courts waited and waited and waited and waited until the petition count deadline expired and the gay side had no choice but to accept that referendum 71 made it on the ballot and would be voted on. Gay couples almost lost their right to full domestic partnerships because of it.

    Comment:

The right wing calls for "let the people decide" should be followed. Incidentally why are not the supporters of Prop 8, "let the voters decide", demanding that the voters/people should decide if the trial should be broadcast? Once again the right wing cockroaches are scared of the light of day or in this case the cameras. They are so proud of their bigotry as long as they are hidden! Brave indeed! Why should we be surprised that SCOTUS would side with them.

    Comment:

When it comes to withholding our rights under the Constitution, we're always told that we should let the people decide. All right, as I see it in this instance, 130,000 people voted FOR broadasting the hearings and 32 voted against it. So, therefore, why are they not broadcasting?
