Pope Calls Gay Marriage an "Attack"

Pope Benedict XVI X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Pope Benedict XVI assailed same-sex marriages as a danger to humanity on Monday in an apparent response to Portugal’s move to legalize same-sex marriage last week.

According to Agence France-Presse, the 82-year-old pope said that humans “can be protected or endangered” in his address to the Vatican diplomatic corps.

"One such attack comes from laws or proposals which, in the name of fighting discrimination, strike at the biological basis of the difference between the sexes," said the pope, citing "certain countries in Europe or North and South America,” reported AFP.

"Freedom cannot be absolute," said the Roman Catholic leader.

Last Friday, Portugal’s parliament approved plans to legalize marriage equality, which could receive a final vote before the pope is scheduled to visit the country in May.

Catholicism is lack luster in the modern world. Just a few years ago they issued a statement that condoms increased the spread of HIV and refused to change that statement after being publicly denounced by the World Health Organization. Religion will be the downfall of our society, not two people getting married.

Hey Nuno, what do you think of this idea? What if the LGBT community in Portugal organizes a nationwide, gay and lesbian "kiss-in" during the papal visit to counter the pope's message of intolerance and bigotry towards homosexuals with a people's message of tolerance and love? It is proper for gay Catholics to show the pope how we feel in a respectful manner (I am NOT suggesting that the kiss-in be held right in front of him while he is speaking). Catholicism can be, is, a beautiful religion. That is why it is so harmful and senseless for the church leaders' to force many LGBT to leave Catholicism by rigidly clinging to ignorant and bigoted ideas because of dogmatic arrogance.

The pope should understand the concept of 'attack', his church has been attacking anyone not agreeing with it 100% for 2 millenia. It is far from a moral compass and should be seen for what it is, a mechanism of social control. any allusion to it's being Christian is a charade.

If there were any honesty in the "Holy Church" it would be renamed, "The Cult Of the Buttfucked Altarboy". Anybody with any doubts about how many raped boys (and sometimes girls) souls & psyches have been irreparably damaged by what is essentially an indescribably evil multinational, multibillion dollar corporation should watch "Deliver Us From Evil", an Oscar nominated documentary film which goes behind the scenes of the sleazy and very dark machinations of this utterly corrupt enterprise (available on NetFlix). As a gay man who is a devoted EX Catholic (recovering Catho-holic) I consider myself lucky I was never diddled by a priest during my brief stint as an altarboy. But that didn't prevent 2 different priests in different cities/parishes later on from hitting on me and asking me out on dates during confession. What crock!! And gives cred to my first boyfriend's story: he'd tricked with numerous Vatican guards, who were fucking all the Cardinals in Vatican City. When in Rome!

His upbringing in Nazi germany shows through, doesnt it the issue is that in western Europe the church is dying (glory to God in the Highest, Amen). Only about 15% of people go to chrurch regularly. While Portugal with Marriage, and Ireland with CUs are around the corner. Leaving only italy and Greece as bastions of gay religious hatred like Muslim Countries. BTW, it was the Catholic church's hatred of the Jews, throughout a millenia, that was absorbed by Hitler, growing up in very Catholic Austria. He leveraged that hatred to gain control of Germany, and 50 million died. Then the church - legally a state- gave passports to many nazis, helping them to escape to South America. The chuich has yet to ExCommunicate hitler , born and baptised a Catholic. Prob because they'd have to excommunicate the church as well. And the Pope recenttly UNexcommunicated a Bishop Williamson. He heads 600,000 extremists, and is a holocaust denier. Benedict is a Sadistic old man. Satan himself.

I respect the Pope of the church that I believe to be giving, kind, and in its own ways, a symbol of tradition and faith. I am an American Republican, Roman Catholic gay man, and I obviously support gay marriage. If he wishes to ban it, then he better ban divorce, because two people that hate each other have more of a right to be married than two people who are in love and willing to be good to each other and form a NORMAL, happy, fully functional family, which is what this world needs today. Respectfully, he is the leader of the Roman Catholic church, not a head of state of any political region, and his opinion does not matter in any election, nor should it matter, nor is it necessary. Life is too short for freedom to "not be absolute"; to be told who to love by narrow minded people, and even though I respect the choices of those who don't support gay marriage, there are millions of BETTER ways he could have stated his/these opinions, even if he was God himself.

Why would any self-respecting gay be a part of the Catholic Church? Why does the main stream media give a forum to this NAZI who pretends to care for the people of the world? Why would anyone give money to an organization that controls so much wealth already? If there i a God, "What Would Jesus Say About The Bigotry Geing Spewed In His/Her Name"?

Is the Pope aware of what the worlds population is?? Straight people breed irresponsibly and child abuse/neglect is an epidemic. Gay marriage isnt attacking anyone, and Im so sick of people like the Pope trying to sugar coat their message of hatred. Why doesnt he just admit that he'd prefer it if LGBT people were thrown in prison and executed because he hates them.
