Gay Weddings Coming to U.K. Parliament

House of Commonsx390 (Tom Corser) | Advocate.com

The speaker of the house of commons said Thursday that he believes the U.K. parliament is on track to host its first-ever civil partnership ceremony before May.

Speaker John Bercrow told journalists after a lunch in London that he was “optimistic,” according to Bloomberg.

Recently, the speaker issued a recommendation for allowing civil partnerships to take place in parliament's Palace of Westminster as an incentive to encourage more gay people to run for office.

“Authorities have already applied for a license to host the event, Bercow said,” according to Bloomberg. “Civil partnerships, permitted in the U.K. since 2005, cannot take place at religious venues. Weddings have long been carried out in the chapels on the grounds of Parliament.”

The civil partnership legislation, although not providing marriage equality, does grant same-sex couples all of the rights og marriage. Not even marriages performed in the U.S.A. grant same-sex couples all of the rights of marriage due to D.O.M.A. It's silly to push for marriage equality at the expense of getting civil unions. Civil unions are not perfect, but they're better than nothing.

You can't have a "wedding" if you don't have civil "marriage." Civil union offers only some of the benefits on civil marriage. I admire Canada, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal for offering civil marriage to their born gay/lesbian citizens rather than separate and unequal civil union. Of course the US is so backward because we allow them to be. Without a revolution in the US, we'll get nowhere.

The US is no longer a lot of things, sadly.

Civil Rights is well respected in Europe. The US is no longer the leader of civil rights.
