Golden Girl Recovers From Stroke

RUE MCCLANAHAN X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Rue McClanahan is now recovering from a stroke that followed her November heart bypass surgery.

The former Golden Girl suffered the stroke soon after the surgery, though doctors were able to remove the blood clot that caused the stroke. The 75-year-old actress is not home yet: she spent two weeks in the ICU and is now in a nursing facility for rehabilitation.

According to her husband, Matthew Wilson, her voice and movement have been affected. "She's going to require a lot more physical and speech therapy — but at least it's not like I stay awake at nights anymore thinking that Rue is going to die."

To say thanks for having me, I took my mom to see Rue McClanahan as Ms. Morrible in "Wicked" on my fortieth birthday. The next day, quite by acciddent, I bumped into Ms. McClanahan in a frame shop in Time Square. I thanked her for the wonderful performance and for all the wonderful work through the years. She was picking up a very large frame job and as soon as I saw she had intended to carry it out herself, offered to carry it for her. (I was raised right, you see, as I am a Southern boy.) She graciously accepted my offer and I had the honor of walking her to work at the Gershwin. She was just as sweet as she could be and I loved connecting with another Southerner way up there in big ole New York City. God bless you, Rue. Speedy recovery. Jeff Key

Get well soon Rue, you are in my thoughts. I saw you in the audience of a play in Oklahoma City a few years back. You looked so beautiful and I wanted to say hello, but I was a little star struck. Thank you for many years of laughter in the Golden Girls.

What a grand lady! I hope she gets well soon. And I too loved the series sordid lives. I wrote logo to see if a second season was possible....they didn't say no but they didn't say yes either. What a great performance by her and all the cast of that show. Get well....

A pity Logo didn't want to continue with Sordid Lives as it seems Rue's acting career might be over now. She was splendid in that and the final scene of the series featuring her was a huge cliffhanger. Get well soon!
