"Million Man" Antigay March for Uganda

UGANDA PROTEST 01 X390 (BOX TURTLE BULLETIN YOUTUBE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Ugandan pastor Martin Ssempa said Friday that he plans to stage a “million man” march in February to support the heinous antigay bill pending in parliament.

According to Reuters, Ssempa, who holds close ties to American evangelicals including pastor Rick Warren, positioned the march as a response to international pressure against the bill, which originally proposed the death penalty for gay people in certain instances.

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni appeared to distance himself from the severe bill this week, and leaders have claimed the death penalty provisions were revised to life imprisonment.

"We want to give a postcard that [Museveni] can send to his friend [U.S. president] Barack Obama," Ssempa said in front of posters saying "Africans Unite Against Sodomy" and "Barack Obama Back Off". He said the march is planned for February 17, reported Reuters.

If we remember the days of Amin, Uganda has form in slaughtering undesirables. Rwanda, with even more form in this line, is said to be considering similar legislation., as is Burundi. There are surely more pressing problems for Africa than sexuality. The real problem: the poisonous, fallacious influence of Evangelicals, who seem obsessed with sex. African prelates have lately made comments on the subject that wouldn't be out of place in Mugabe's utterances. If anything's troubling, it's the muted response from main-line European and American religious. Some such still suspect an essential link between homosexuality and paedophilia, in which some hold a grim record themselves. Very well, follow Leviticus etc and execute homosexuals. But be consistent: search out and dispose of anyone who's ever touched pork, worn mixed fabrics or worked on the Holy Day - pastors included, even though that's what they're paid to do.

Let's never forget Udanda's attempt @ passing legislation to put Gays to death in the country. This is a country without the proverbial Pot To Piss In that will no doubt come to America with its hand out in the near future for financial assistance when it cannot manage to feed its masses of Anti-Gay Bigoted Citizens. We must as a communtiy turn to them instead and say "we would help, but we're not welcome by you so our money is not either".

Yes David, I am sure that a President McCain and Vice President Palin would have offerred the moral compass regarding the oppression of sexual minorities and hastened a new age of gay rights world wide. Obama may be lame, but McCain would have been down right paralyzed.

This is their “bug-off” message is response to everyone. We said, meaning all the countries and organizations that came out against the laws, “You’re wrong” and they said, “Go fly a kite, ” and is moving some. They march and we can march too. We could picket against their allegiances and embassies as well. It’s a lot to undertake in addition to our own challenges. We don't want to make the situation worse. Our President and State department were not the only leaders to speak out against the laws. It’s a new world of possibilities but how much can we really expect to affect the laws of another country. We can expect and our leaders to never promote harsh discrimination elsewhere and try, limited at best, to prevent our citizens as well. They will have to realize their rights, just like us. We're just a lot farther ahead.

As usual, most of the comments here are way off-topic and are just attacks at each other. This story is actually pretty alarming, and the US government needs to respond. This is the tip of the iceberg as far as persecutions against gays around the world are concerned. Our lame president needs to make an effort to show the world that intolerance towards sexual minorities itself will not be tolerated. This world, this country needs a strong principled leader like never before. Too bad we have Obama.

To Michael you say “Jesus is a Religion” although many Christians make that mistake, it is not true. Although doctrine is important, being a Christian is primarily about right relationships. Jesus called us friends and that greater love has none than this that he lay down his life for his friends see John 15 9-17. He wants to be our friend and we need to take the first step. Friendship with Jesus is not cheap, but it will be the most meaningful relationship you ever had. Read the book of John and take time to reflect on it and understand it. Then get connected with people who love god and want relationship not religion. Exodus International is one place but there are many other places to start.

To mike (who posted on 1/15/2010 @ 4:37:13 PM) and asked: “There are no numbers for this Jewish group. It could be two or three people setting up a web site. It doesn't list any donations.” Sir, if you bothered to do a little research (rather than just spew your bile) you’d quickly learn that “this Jewish group” was organized in 1985, is dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among people across the globe (including the fight against AIDS), for eight years has received a four star rating from the Charity Navigator website, is a top rated charity by the American Institute of Philanthropy (with an “A” rating), meets all of the Better Business Bureau’s standards for charities, and in 2008 had over $28 million in revenues.

To mike (who posted on 1/15/2010 @ 4:37:13 PM) and asked: “Why didn't the supportive Jews pass gay marriage in New York?” I think if you checked you’ll see they tried. News flash! Jews are a minority even in New York (plus I believe it was conservative Blacks and Hispanics who helped torpedo the bill). Besides, there are such things as conservative Jews. The point of my reference to the article about the Jewish World Service wasn’t to pat my people on the back, but to demonstrate that there are religious groups who support gay rights. As for communism and gay rights, the point was to demonstrate that even countries which were (or are) officially atheist can be no friend to gays. In short, it’s not so simple as religion = anti-gay!
