Notre Dame Pres. Sorry for Antigay Cartoon

NOTRE DAME SCREEN GRAB X390

An antigay editorial cartoon that calls a baseball bat the “quickest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable” has the staff of the University of Notre Dame’s student paper in which it ran and the school’s president scrambling to explain how it was allowed to be published.

The staff of The Observer issued the first apology for the January 13 cartoon, saying, “There is no excuse that can be given and nothing that can be said to reverse the damage that has already been done by this egregious error in judgment.”

On Friday, the Reverend John I. Jenkins,Notre Dame’s president, followed with a statement of his own, printed below.

“The University denounces the implication that violence or expressions of hate toward any person or group of people is acceptable or a matter that should be taken lightly.

“In accordance with Notre Dame’s Spirit of Inclusion, a formal statement adopted by the officers of the University in 1997, at Notre Dame 'we prize the uniqueness of all persons as God’s creatures' and welcome 'all people, regardless of color, gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social or economic class, and nationality.'

“Further, 'we value gay and lesbian members of this community as we value all members of this community. We condemn harassment of any kind' and 'we consciously create an environment of mutual respect, hospitality and warmth in which none are strangers and all may flourish.'

“The University respects The Observer’s status as an independent, student-run newspaper and appreciates that the editorial staff has issued an apology in its January 15th issue and that the cartoon’s authors also have expressed their regret. Notre Dame administrators will work with the Observer staff, as they say in their editorial, to 'move forward, and ... to promote ... a culture of acceptance and support for all.'”

Yes, yes, President Jenkins, Holy Mother Church as always "prize[d] the uniqueness of all persons as God's creatures" . . . recognizing that, as heretics, apostates, and unredeemable Original Sinners, most of them fully deserved to meet death by the sword, the rack, or the pyre. All that's changed is the pious rhetoric, mostly cribbed from the Enlightenment, and adopted only in the face of Holy Mother Church's loss of temporal power. If She still had an empire, she'd be busily striking rivers of blood.

I agree with the truth of the comments about "Cafeteria Catholicism". But to me that's even worse than the true believer who buys the whole Catholic line. At least he's sincere, if misguided and hateful. But someone who clings to the church and picks and chooses tenets according to personal tastes is still adding to the power of the church by attending services, giving money, supporting the schools etc. I don't understand how a thinking, feeling, non-homophobe can stay a member of that organization. I think it's comparable to an aware German in the 1930s saying: "Well, I don't agree with ALL of Hitler's policies."

This so-called "joke," we should all remember, originated about twenty years ago at a national meeting of Republican women. The slogan was made available on bumper stickers. So, its use in a campus newspaper at one of the of most important US universities is troubling, not only because it reveals contempt for the people who have suffered from AIDS. Its use also reveals a profound lack of originality and creativity. By comparison, the newspaper's published "apology" is far more creative. If you Google it, you will find a well crafted "non-apology" that attempts to position this "gaffe" in the same category as Senator Reid's recently revealed remarks about President Obama's skin tone. Thus, the perfidious techniques of propaganda are now incorporated into campus journalism. These are very silly children, indeed.

anyone who gives money to the Catholic Church increases their power. Anyone who attends Catholic Church or participates in their institutions increases their power. Anyone who supports the Catholic Church increases their power. And how do they use their power? Educating children and empowering adults to believe that violence against us is OK. Their leader is a Nazi. The Church is evil. [BTW, I am a recovering Catholic.]

Doug, with all due respect, most Catholics do NOT follow the exact teachings of the Pope, nor do they do everything he says. Think only of the Church's doctrine against artificial birth control. A MINIMAL number of Catholics practice it. Most practicing Catholics today are considered "cafeteria Catholics" as they "pick and choose" which tenets of the faith they elect to follow.

Thank you Kevin for the insight, however I must disagree with you on principle that I think most Catholic people would follow everything that the Pope said. I mean he's the Pope, right? Exactly. You also have to take into account the intellectual level and education of the masses. Not a pretty picture!

Doug, of Winston-Salem, NC wrote: "When the Pope speaks his words are to be followed exactly." That is not true. The doctrine of the Catholic Church is that when the Pope speaks EX CATHEDRA (Latin for "From the Chair"), then and ONLY then do Catholics have to believe what he says. Pope Benedict and John Paul I never spoke "Ex Cathedra." However, John Paul II did. http://eucharistandmission.blogspot.com/2009/12/pope-john-paul-ii-pius-xii-taught-ex.html
