Wyoming School Board Removes Antihate Banners

NO PLACE FOR HATE WHEATLAND HIGH SCHOOL X390 (HS WEB SITE) | ADVOCATE.COM

School board members in Wheatland, Wyo., have prohibited antidiscrimination banners because an LGBT rights group is among their sponsors.

"If this is the way one chooses, then they can lead this particular lifestyle, but I don't believe it needs to be publicly displayed in a school," Platte County School District 1 board member Lee Dunham said of the banners, according to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

District administrators removed the banners after parents and school board members expressed concern over the fact that the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado is listed as a sponsor. The banners are part of the Anti-Defamation League's “No Place for Hate” campaign, involving a variety of activities designed to teach young people about tolerance and respecting differences; other sponsors include the David and Laura Merage Foundation and Qwest Communications. Platte County trustees this week rejected a request to put the banners back up, voting 4-3 this week to keep them down at Wheatland High School and West Elementary School.

Board members have accused the Anti-Defamation League of promoting same-sex marriage in their conservative town. "I don't believe [homosexuality] is a normal lifestyle, but I don't have anything against them," board member Joe Fabian said. He went on to blame school administrators for allowing the banners without board approval and he implied students not supportive of the banner faced ridicule.

Bruce DeBoskey, regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, says schools can’t participate in the program if they don’t use the banners.

"[The Anti-Defamation League] will no longer allow the program if it's not being honored and used in its fullest intent," he told the Tribune Eagle. "The [league] is extremely concerned that this whole program has been derailed by people who appear to have biases."

The schools were two of 25 in Colorado and Wyoming involved in the program.

Come on everyone, let's put our weapons down, pick up the Bible (sword), and love eachother uncondtionally as God teaches in His Word. We have drifted so very far away from the heart of God and it's breakng His heart as it did with lsrael. Let's love as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did when He came to set an example for us. May God bless and direct you all as you seek only His will and heart in serving Him!

To all of us in Wyoming, the comments and support that's showing up on the Wheaterville website is wonderful to see. letters from WHS grads, parents of current and former students, members of the local community, and from all over Wyoming are inspirational and really help to make the point that not everyone in Wheatland is small minded. There are indeed people who are standing up for what is right. And we do not want just "tolerance"...we want acceptance. If that is a "gay agenda" so be it. There doesn't seem to be much support for the hate from the people of Wheatland. Ultraconservative? Not most, maybe not many. The ones who are are vocal, but the good is coming thru loud and clear. The petition on www.wheaterville.com hit 500 tonight. They could really take it to 10,000 and wouldn't that be something? Drop a line to Rachel maddow at rachel@msnbc.com It'd be a great feature on her or Olberman's show! Ban the Hate, not the Banner Wheatland! My best to the people of Wheatland!

Sign a petition to get those No Place For Hate banners back up, in order to support freedom and justice for ALL! http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/NoBanningTheBanner/ I signed with the comment: Two of my sisters go to Wheatland Highschool, and I want them to be in an environment of intelligence and kindness and inclusiveness, not fear and short-sightedness. Whether or not a student is LGBTQIA, this sort of intolerance and hatred (however masked the hatred may be to those that hate) creates an atmosphere that is detrimental to all people in all of our diversity and uniqueness. Of course it is incredibly detrimental to the 10% of the population who is LGBTQIA--those that are out of the closet, in the closet, perhaps even those that are in the closet and have so much hatred directed against themselves that they choose to outwardly support taking down the poster. This is a good opportunity for learning. Let's turn this around!

The signs say "No Place For Hate." Perhaps, someone can just replace the word "No" with the word "A" and it will make these bigots happy. A PLACE FOR HATE. All better now? Praise Jee-Zussa!

Have you ever noticed that right-wing A-holes, who claim to be "concerned for children," lose their "concern" the minute they find a GLBTQ child or one with GLBTQ parents? What these sh*ts really want is for their little monster children to be free to verbally, physically, & sexually attack the people these parents hate. They then claim ignorance & innocence, while still refusing to control them. The violence will stop when WE start holding the PARENTS accountable for the actions of THEIR children. It's similar to when a dog owner USES their pet as a WEAPON thinking that they can just blame the animal. And officials will ALWAYS claim that "someone complained," but they never say WHO it is. They may not exist or it may only be 1 person. So why do invisible people get to decide for everybody? And what difference does it make who SPONSORED the campaign? The Catholic Church sponsored Prop 8 in CA & THEY MOLEST CHILDREN. Judy Shepard should throw the fence Matt was tied to @ them!

I live here in Wheatland right now, and am very upset with what the school board did. I have been out since 2001 and when I moved back yes people had issues with it. But since then I haven't had any problems, I can go out to the bar, have fun, and walk around town and not worry about anything. I have been out of school for 11 years but am upset that certain parents and a few school board members feel it right to have these views about gay people. I know it's a small town, but it's 2010, no one should have to deal with this anymore. Everyone that I've talked to about it is upset as well, and has no problem with the banners, and they're happy for the students for standing up in what they believe in. I was told that a lot of the students have "No Hate" posters on their lockers. Living here my whole life it's different that the kids in town are ok with something like this but parents aren't. I'm proud of them, and hope that the banners get hung back up immediately.

We started a petition to not Ban The Banner. You can get to it from www.wheaterville.com where there a lot of comments about what's going on at WHS. We want the banner back. We want to make our town and our community and WHS be No Place for Hate. There are more of us that want to respect all people than the four school board members who made this awful decision. Please sign the petition, pass it around if you know of others who might support it. Wheatland, and Wyoming really is No Place For Hate! Thank you!
