Zelda Rubinstein Dead at 76

ZELDA RUBINSTEIN X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Zelda Rubinstein, the Poltergeist actress and HIV activist, died Wednesday at the Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 76.

The 4-foot, 3-inch actress had various health problems following a mild heart attack she suffered late last year.

Rubinstein will be remembered by gays for being one of the first celebrities to lend her name and face to an HIV/AIDS public awareness campaign aimed at gay men. In a series of billboards and posters that blanketed Los Angeles in the mid '80s, Rubinstein portrayed "Mother," a sweet maternal figure who urged her "sons" to play safe. The posters soon spread nationally and then internationally.

The actress spoke to Advocate.com recently about her role in the L.A. Cares campaign and the hit her career took for participating in it (see attached video).

Born in Pittsburgh in 1933, Rubinstein worked as a lab technician until getting into acting in her 40s. Her performance as the psychic Tangina in Poltergeist was hailed by critics, and she later nabbed roles in that movie's sequels and the quirky television show Picket Fences.

Rubinstein spoke out not only for safe sex but for the rights of gays and little people.

Thank you for your lovely tribute to actress and AIDS pioneer, Zelda Rubinstein. In 1984-85, I was the publicist honored to conceive and produce what would become the first national AIDS awareness campaign. The spokescharacter I found for that campaign was a diminutive but charismatic actress named Zelda Rubinstein, who became our nation’ first "Mother" for AIDS prevention, pointing her cooking spoon at countless millions at risk and warning them sternly to "Play Safely." Zelda Rubinstein was, in fact, the first celebrity spokesperson in any AIDS awareness campaign at a time when it was a huge risk to her fledgling career. For five years, "Mother" went into bars, clubs--even bathhouses--to promote safe sex and never accepted a cent for her efforts. She was a true pioneer in the battle against AIDS and I remember our years on the AIDS battlefront together with great pride and many bittersweet memories. Rest in peace, Zelda, you were a little giant among us!

What an amazing and courageous woman, and we should all be deeply saddened by her loss. Many of us who were party age in that era, esp here in the deep south (sigh) were unaware that she boldly took the lead in the campaign for tolerance and AIDS awareness. Of course we ALL knew the moment Elizabeth spoke out because she was such a HUGE star. It's a shame that many will perhaps never know that an actress, due to her natural physical uniqueness, who would only have limited acting roles to choose from, and the most to lose, was the first and most brave. Zelda Rubinstein was a tiny woman with a giant heart and the courage of a warrior. So now beautiful Zelda has gone into the light. It is comforting to know that so many will be there to welcome her, and to know she will be there to welcome us when it is our time. RIP, dearest Zelda. I hope you know just how much you will be missed.
