NOM Investigation Going Forward

MAINE FUNDRAISER X390 (FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

The National Organization for Marriage wants a delay in an investigation by the state of Maine into the group's finances, but that state's ethics commission denied its request.

NOM contributed almost $2 million to repeal Maine's gay marriage law. Now an investigation is being launched into NOM's finances, but the organization wants to wait until its lawsuit  challenging the constitutionality of reporting requirements is decided before the investigation takes place.

"I understand concerns about duplicate efforts, but that's part of the hand we are dealt," said ethics commision member Margaret Matheson. "We're charged with ensuring that voters have that information and that's the crux of this investigation."

Here's an excellent example of how the National Organization for Marriage ("NOM") lies and distorts. The following article shows how the Floria Family Policy Council faked photos of a gay couple to inflame and anger viewers. The fake photo is on the left; the right shows an unaltered photo of the couple. Many readers angry about Florida's ban on gay adoption February 4, 2010 http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/os-scott-maxwell-friday-files-020510-20100204,0,7661716.column

The whole stinkin, rotten mess has got to be uncovered. If anything, for history's sake.

What are radical anti-gay activists Gallagher and Brown trying to hide? Maybe the money tap gets turned off if too much dirt is uncovered and then how could they buy their nice things...I mean "protect traditional marriage?"

unfortunately for Maggie, her new Orange jumpsuit is going to make her look fatter than she already is. if that's possible. In other news: Maggie wrote a letter to I guess Judge walkers higher up stating that the trial is tainted because of the threat of mr. Walker to televise the trial causing her witnessess to fear for their safety so much that could not even fly to Sacramento to be witnesses. of course I wrote her back to point out that the trial was in SANFRANCISCO...not Sacramento. I reminded her that once again she was showing a clear sign that she struggles constantly to report the TRUTH with numbers and facts.

Well, NOM certainly has some reason to seek a delay, and they clearly think its in their best interest to get a delay, and even if its just the usual stall tactics about releasing names of donors until no one cares anymore, I for one am glad the ruling went against them! Besides, it might conceivably have an impact on the federal trial because these kinds of issues of political power, and motivation of anti-gay groups were seen as relevant in the trial and there was testimony on those matters. So, if its relevant, perhaps it could have an impact somehow? For example, couldn't the prop 8 trial plaintiffs ask the court to allow additional relevant evidence now because it wasn't previously available?

I misread too. And if the Advocate article is incorrect as to whether it's the Prop 8 trial or the disclosures trial, Advocate should correct that.

Actual Rich I think DanO makes an excellent point. I read today on the American Foundation for Equal Rights website than Walker was permitting both sides to submit further evidence for review for the next few weeks. I can imagine that's EXACTLY what Gallagher is thinking. Of all of our enemies this organization gives me the most gas. I want that organization to be taken torn down piece by piece.

The story that originally ran in the Portland Press Herald doesn't even mention Prop 8. The federal suit that's mentioned in the original story is the one that's challenging the Constitutionality of Maine's campaign finance disclosure laws. The Advocate reported on the beginnings of this lawsuit back in October. Someone's got Prop 8 on the brain. http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2009/10/23/NOM_Sues_Over_Maine_Reporting_Law/
