The Man Who Popped the Question to Obama

HECTOR FLORES X390 (PALMER HOLMES) | ADVOCATE.COM

The day after President Obama reiterated his pledge to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in his State of the Union address, he traveled to the University of Tampa in Florida for a town hall meeting. He took six questions from the crowd, including one from Hector Flores, a senior performing arts and communication major, who went last and asked the president about equality for same-sex couples, including marriage.

Flores, a 21-year-old native of Jersey City, New Jersey, talked to Advocate.com about asking the question, and what he thought of the president's answer.

Advocate.com: How did you feel about the State of the Union speech?
Hector Flores: I watched it several times. A lot of the reforms had to do with the financial deficit that we’re facing and other valid issues, but I wanted to have clarification that gays are also in the groups to be taken care of.

Are you involved with gay rights activities on campus?
I am involved somewhat. We have an organization here at the University of Tampa. I go their events when I can. I am also in a fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha, an honor society, Alpha Psi Omega, and I am a resident advisor. That’s how I found out about the event.

How long did you have to prepare for the president’s visit?
I received an email, probably two days before, saying that because I was a campus leader, I had a ticket to go see Obama, and asking me whether I wanted to accept it. Of course, I wanted to go.

I love brave people, and I think Hector Flores was very brave to stand up and ask such an important question for many of us. Good for him! And good for Obama, that he didn't hide behind politics and give a total non-answer. I think we'll get there. I just think it takes a lot of small steps for this kind of mega-change to happen. Dear Doctor, Call me an idiot!(but that I am not), your words mean nothing to me. I can speak of the issue in "big words" too. I choose not too. I don't care what you learned in class last week, I care about to days society and to days people. If you truly believe that American society is run by the Vatican you are naive. There is a reason why we choose to be a free and why christianity is the fastest dying religions in to days society. Please don't kid yourself, Americas youth are young, free willed and free minded. Yes, maybe they are not the majority of the voters; but they are a smart generation that certainly won't fall for the conservative politics that you have.

I feel it's real great that this student 'popped the question' Your Pres is a great man I think. And his heart is in the place. After alll we're just like other minorities. Up here in Canada, the marriage thing in s a done deal. I attended my friends' wedding on the day I returned home from Thailand. It was a very emotional affair and entierly validating. It's necessary not only to be seen as equal but also to be fully equal. This is why marriage is the big deal. And that's why 'the other side' keeps holding on to it so vigourously. That in itself should be reason enough to want to have it. I think it's shameful that the US still doesn't have this. You look so backward compared to many other countries.

Thank you dr Mekah for your wonderful insite i think the Roman Catholic church and churches worldwide hold so much power in Democratic elected countries in todays world is so unhealthy. It really has to stop there has to be a difference between country and church that all politicans have to follow there should not ever be a decision or law by any govenment that effects human equality and civil rights that is based on the belief of a church. This rationale over centuries has delivered to us today a society so wrapped in discrimination, denial of equality not just for the LGBT community. Our elected officals have to stand up to church and base there decisions for the people all the people all the time.Thankyou Mr Flores for being brave and asking the difficult questions and putting your elected offical on notice a few years ago it would not or could not have happened we have come along way and distance to go is still long we will need more of you not only in your country but in ours

    Comment:

The consistent denial of Equality, specifically targeting the LGBT Community, has been a shamefully dominant and discriminatory dogmatic driving force, as a result of deliberate religious interference. Instead of embracing a humanitarian rationale for the coexistence of a "Live and Let Live" guiding principle, an inhumane agenda to suppress Human and Civil Rights, has replaced the prerogative for an independent lifestyle of choice, with a pious decree for Bias, Hate and Judgmental Persecution. Who, actually controls the United States and it's political machine? Is it the President, Senate, Congress, and/or the "Free" citizens of this country? The answer, is overwhelmingly unmistakable, the Vatican! Our inalienable entitlement for Unequivocal Equality is being prohibited, by a Foreign Country! Our nation, has always championed for the civil liberties of oppressed people, worldwide. Our soldiers, are fighting and dying, in order to eliminate an aggressive terror campaign, which was ignited on September 11, 2001. Why, then, have we allowed the conscious crusade of domestic religious bullying and intimidation to exist in this country? Unprogressive judgmental rhetoric , is deeply rooted in a learned environment. Generations of closed minds, supporting discriminatory rhetoric, breeds misguided ignorance. As United States Citizens, Taxpayers, Voters, Contributors to Society, Veterans, and first and foremost, Human Beings, we should NEVER have to "ask" for Equality! Domestic Partner's, must not be denied ALL the same privileges and benefits, our society provides for. Dr. Mekah Gordon, Ph.D. Civil & Human Rights Advocate

And as long as my rights are equal and the same as heterosexuals; I personally don't care what they are called Domestic Partnerships or Civil Unions. I strive to be different but equal in society, I accept myself for me. Truthfully I'd rather not have my relationship called a marriage. I prefer not to be associated with right wing hippocrates.

Micheal, You stated in your comment "Not to be disrespectful", why then would you think that it is appropriate to use the F word in a comment towards the president? I could never use your disrespect toward any person especially the president of the United states. Minorities waited for their civil rights as it takes small steps to get to our ultimate goal. The president realizes this as was said in his debate speeches. I worry not because I know the ultimate prize is ours. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow; but we will prevail. The president has been against gay marriage from the start. If you recall the president has always been pro equal rights. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, Obama said, "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."
