The Family Serves National Prayer Breakfast

JEFF SHARLET 2 X390 (COURTESY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Journalist Adele Stan talks with Jeff Sharlet, expert on the Family, about the right-wing religious network’s National Prayer Breakfast, which will take place this Thursday with a scheduled address from President Barack Obama.

Earlier, the Family was reported to have connections with antigay politicians in Uganda who sponsored the bill that proposes the death penalty for gay people.

According to Stan at Alternet, “The breakfast draws leaders from all sectors of society, including a hefty contingent from the military. It's a coveted invitation. The event is usually the only public sighting of its sponsor, the shadowy right-wing religious network known as the Family. Around the periphery of the event, the Family does what it does best: bringing together leaders from developing countries of special concern to U.S. business interests with members of Congress and people in government who hold the keys to the foreign aid kingdom.”

Sharlet predicts that Obama will seek to keep his address to the group “low key," according to Alternet.

There are three major activities planned in DC and nationwide to draw attention to the evil of The Family, whose US members including Rick Warren, are personally responsible for igniting the wave of anti-gay hatred sweeping Africa and culminating in the "kill the gays" legislation pending in Uganda. Full details are in the press release kit from Full Equality Now DC (FENDC), which is providing DC ground support and local protest. (fullequalitynowdc.com) Join us Wed 2/3 at 133 C St. SE, the Family's infamous dormitory for congressmen on Capitol Hill. FENDC will demonstrate at 5:30. If you are in town, come on down. On Thursday join us as we offer prayers nationwide in the American Prayer Hour: That we shall be able to fulfill our destiny as the leaders of humanity into the New Age. That those who have abused us be freed from their fears and enabled to love and be loved. And that we shall always know how to follow the will of God in our lives.

Send an email to the White House. I did. It took about 30 seconds. All I did was express my disappointment at being seated in back of the bus after being promised otherwise. The Borgia's were family too, as were the Khans, and most recently the Mansons.

Where is our anger at this? An ultra-right wing anti-gay group being addressed by the President of the United States is an outrage! We MUST react!

somebody needs to start helping secular groups and put a stop to these "convert or starve" programs. What load of crap. And we wonder why poor countries are also so homophobic.

The mere fact that in the 21st Century our politicians hold "prayer" gatherings is a bit ridiculous, IMHO. Just do your damn job and keep your praying/preaching/etc. in your own private life. Most other people don't have prayer/etc. when they go to work, why do politicians have to be different?

Well, they're going to get a kick out of one of the President's guests. Spanish PM Zapatero has legalised abortions up to 22weeks for the over-16s, legalised morning-after pills for all (no age limit required), is the most anti-Christian Spanish PM in over 70years and has prohibited religious services for those Spanish Armed Forces members who are killed. Quite apart from legalising same-sex marriages. So, the National Prayer Breakfast will be a real hoot this year!!! :-)

    Comment:

Obamas mere PRESENCE at this event puts a certain imprimatur on it. This is especially distressing given the treatment issues of LGBT people in Uganda. I realize that Obama has political commitments to keep; but having campaigned as a 'fierce advocate' for the LGBT community, his presence at this event seem to be a clear statement that he has no interest in keeping any of his campaign pledges to us. Oh well, there's always November!
