Minds Changing on Gay Rights in Utah

SALT LAKE TRIBUNE POLL XFULL (SLT) | ADVOCATE.COM

The people of Utah are coming around on gay rights, or so says a recent Salt Lake Tribune poll.

Support for employment protections and hospital visitation rights jumped 11 percentage points from a poll taken a year ago. Even among Mormons, the increase was seen, with approval shooting up by 10 percentage points.

The article suggests that two Salt Lake City ordinances pushed and approved by Mayor Ralph Becker — and endorsed by the Mormon Church — may have influenced the changed minds.

To the loon from France a few post down. Not only I'm not afraid of having Republican winning election to stick it to the lip-service Dems, I'm actually voting for one this June primary and hopefully this Nov. If you're in CA, make sure to switch your party from Dem to "Decline to State" to be able to join in the Republican primary this June and vote for Tom Campbell (UC PhD in Economics) to reward him for his courage to stand up for marriage equality. It's time to tell Barbara Boxer to shove her party empty promises up NObama's ass and send her back to wherever the hell she's from. We need to target these Dems one by one until they understand who they are working for.

Its generous of them to consider seperate but equal in SLC, we should feel good about this... I wonder if it is not so much about doing the right thing as it is trying to settle the dust from the recent mormon ambush on the gay communities in other states. They have to realize that their recent actions have damaged their reputation quite a bit so they are probably trying to show that theyre not really hateful. I think it is frickin hilarious that in the prop 8 trial transcript, testimony was given that they fear SSM will lead to polygamy, by a mormon at that! Polygamy is part of the mormon religion, they believe GOD himself has multiple wives on his distant planet (rofl).

Um, Brad Bailey, we do have those rights in NY and CA. In Utah, it's only within Salt Lake County.

Independant association and solidarity are good for some things and others not. I give money to independant organizations and vote for local independant candidates who have a good shot. But I vote democrat on a national level. When the national elections are at stake, don't vote for third parties. It divides the progressive vote and makes for a right wing victory.

Many GLBT activists on sites like Bilerico have protested loudly and longly against making same-sex marriage, DADT, DOMA, and ENDA the focus of the gay rights movement. They have argued that equal housing and employment laws should have been the focus all along. Well, they got what they wanted. Only it happened in Utah, not New York or California. That ought to blow their ultra-politically correct little minds. And yes, I've started voting green and Libertarian. It feels damned good not to have to vote for the "lesser of two evils" anymore. If we keep doing the same thing, we'll keep getting the same results.

Dj, you need to know who you're talking about before you criticize. I'm by no means am a fan of the Mormon Church's policies. However, I do know that the mainstream church DOES NOT endorse polygamy or child marriage. Only sects unaffiliated with the Church do. To attack them using that method is no different than an anti-gay group attacking us for supposed child molestation or other outrageous claims. Personally, I feel the Mormon leadership needs to stay out of politics. I recognize that Utah will always be a Mormon state, so Gay Rights Activists should focus on other states. They leave us alone, we leave them alone. I think that's a fair trade.

lol, this is hilarious. Utah is basically one giant cult. After suffering a public relations nightmare over Prop 8, the mormon leaders decide its in their best interest to support employment and housing protection for gay people. They wave their hand and the entire state falls right into line. If those same leaders told their followers to toss their kids off the Grand Canyon, 90% of them would.
