Orrin Hatch Open to DADT Repeal

ORRIN HATCH X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

Republican Utah senator Orrin Hatch said he would be open to repealing the military's ban on service by out gays and lesbians.

In an interview on MSNBC Wednesday, Hatch said members of the military should not have to lie about their sexual orientation. He did add, however, that he wasn't sure if he would be willing to vote to change the policy.

"I think a lot of people are concerned that if you do away with the 'don't ask, don't tell,' that literally then they'll come back and ask for special rights and preference and privileges that others don't have ... I just plain do not believe in prejudice of any kind."

He added that Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Adm. Michael Mullen asked for a year of research on implications of the repeal, which may be too long for some and not nearly long enough for others.

"I can see why people on both sides are upset," he said. "I just wanna do what's right."

BTW, Orrin Hatch just signed on to a bill to stop marriage equality in Washington DC! Congrats on one issue, but we know where you really stand! http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/02/03/senators-aim-to-stop-d-c-same-sex-marriage/?fbid=WTvyHFeuc8c

Didn't Martin Luther King say in his I have a Dream speech, "Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom let us not drink from the cup of bitterness and hatred." I believe that Orrin Hatch was being dead honest about his opinion, and although it's not nearly good enough, it is progress. How can we move forward and burn bridges at the same time?

What a bigot is Hatch! He's afraid to repeal DADT because then maybe, just maybe, gays "...literally then they'll come back and ask for special rights and preference and privileges that others don't have ... I just plain do not believe in prejudice of any kind." Orin Hatch doesn't believe in "prejudice of any kind." Unless it's against gays, of course.

Maybe jsut a bit of an opening. What republican would want to see the gays in the military - easily 100,000 of them decide to come out en masse, and demand release under DADT. But on the other hand, maybe we could draft all the religious bigots, and send them to afghanistan. Where they would meet the same type of people - same shit, different jesus, at the business end of Bin Ladens guns. Glory to God in the Highest.

I'm confused... he says he's open to repealing DADT, but isn't willing to vote to repeal it? Talk about pandering to both sides! If he's serious when he says he's open to repealing it, I certainly appreciate that... but his comments that follow that "openness" make me believe he's being disingenuous.

I have to give Senator Hatch some credit here. He is a very conservative senator, but he is clearly open to staring down the homophobic bigots in his own party---pretty courageous if you ask me. I am a liberal who disagrees with Hatch on virtually all the issues, but I have to admire his openness on this issue. I think we, as a gay community have to be open to Republicans, who offer us an olive branch. Thinking people in the Republican Party (admittedly an small minority) know they have to get on the right side of history on gay issues. We are going to win full equality, and they know it. Unless they want to be a permanent minority, they must find a way out of the corner into which their extremists have painted them. Maybe this is a good start on Senator Hatch's part.

I was in the Navy 13 tears. My wife has been for 17 years. We have both known gay service members we were proud to serve with. It is time for this policy to be repealed. There are however many issues that will need time to get worked out. In boot camps, service academies, aboard ships or in barracks or camps, berthing space and accommodations are separated male/female. Why are they separated now? A couple reasons. To prevent the temptation of sexual attraction of these young kids and also to protect the modesty of those who would not want to be seen in various stages of undress by one who would be sexually attracted to them. If the military takes the leap and admits the potential for sexual attraction is no longer a valid reason to keep homosexuals excluded, there would also be no valid justification to continue to keep men and women separated. It seems that the male/female separation hurdle might be harder for society to swallow, but the party line is moving toward trusting service members to control their sexual impulses regardless of the close contact with members they may be attracted to, regardless of orientation or preference. If the military is able to move this far, it may be a money saver. Instead of spending millions to retrofit submarines to accommodate women, the ships can remain unmodified and we fit women in the current buildout. Instead of duplicative male/female barracks, we can consolidate space. Is society there yet. Can we go that far. Probably. We just need the old folks in congress to get on board with the society that they are so out of touch with. Term Limits would help.

Watch the mormons very closely. They are trying very hard to appear benevolent and we all know they are not.
