Republicans Reject Gay Rights in Poll

Poll x390 (Photos.com) | Advocate.com

A new Daily Kos/Research 2000 delivers some extreme results on how self-identified Republicans feel about gay rights. Vast majorities of Republicans said they do not feel that gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve in the military, marry, receive federal or state benefits, or teach in public schools.

According to the Daily Kos, the poll was conducted by calling 2,003 self-identified Republicans nationwide between January 20 and 31. Notwithstanding the wisdom of putting gay rights up for debate in a poll, here are the relevant questions and results:

Should openly gay men and women be allowed to serve in the military?

Yes 26%
No 55%
Not Sure 19%

Should same-sex couples be allowed to marry?

Yes 7%
No 77%
Not Sure 16%

Should gay couples receive any state or federal benefits?

Yes 11%
No 68%
Not Sure 21%

Should openly gay men and women be allowed to teach in public schools?

Yes 8%
No 73%
Not Sure 19%

Yes, and in 1840 no doubt the majority of Republicans would not have supported the rights of African American people to no longer be slaves. Perhaps they would have called for a study and then a committee to evaluate the possible implications of ending slavery. Overall, we don't want to rush into things too quickly. Slavery has been working for a long time and is supported by the Bible, so let's go slowly and not be rash and jump into this antislavery thing until we put it to a vote. As Senator John McCain would no doubt have been asking had he been there in 1840, will the United States be safer if African-Americans are allowed to become free? As my modern-day senator told me, "I don't think people are ready yet for the gay rights you are asking for" People's rights should not be subject to the opinion of the majority. That is the bottom line.

Politics are brutal and nasty primarily because of the rabid, cutthroat, desperate Republican tactics started by Nixon and honed to an art by the likes of Karl Rove and Fox News. After 12 years of Reagan/Bush1, Clinton was the true "shining city on a hill" and "thousand points of light" that this country needed! But, he was SO hated by the Republicans that they put this country through the impeachment process for only the 2nd time in history, hampering progress for most of Clinton’s presidency. He wasn’t a saint and he ended up handling the gay/military issue poorly, BUT HE TRIED! Obama’s barely had time to deal with the huge mess left by Bush2. He got a lot of folks to pay attention to politics for the first time who then wanted instant change, and I hate to see them disillusioned, but really, the LGBT community has NO alternative. Read the Republican platform “values” at gop.com/2008platform. So repealing DADT is finally in the works. It will happen. Thank Obama and the many military gay men & women who have served and proved the world won’t end!

And to address Penny's concern, with an average of 68% of those polled being against gay rights, I'm fairly confident this poll is representative of what A LOT of Republicans think about gay rights!

keith douglas said "0.0000006% of the American People. A statistically insignificant sample for this study" Well, assuming that you've never taken a research methodology class in your life, I can assure you that 2005 people is well over the necessary amount of people needed for a proper sample size. Firstly, unless you're assuming that 0.0000006% of the American people are Republican (I wish!), I doubt all 300 million of Americans are Republican, and since the poll is only polling REPUBLICANS, 0.0000006% is a false number to use. Rasmussen, a generally conservative polling institution, estimates that about 53 million Americans self-identify as Republicans. Using a common sample size calculator, with a confidence level of 99% and a confidence interval of +/-5% for a population of 53 million, the appropriate sample size would be about 670 people. Just 670 people, so 2005 is MORE than enough!

@Keith,I don't think you know what the term "statistically significant" means. If the poll is conducted properly, and Research 2000 is a pretty good outfit, then 2000 is a pretty reasonable sample, and the poll should be accurate within +/- 5% or so.

That may be Travis, but in the majority of states in this country, there is no job protection for lgbt people. We can be fired simply because of who we are, who we were born as, and that's why homophobic legislation is so chilling. Why must there always be a scapegoat in civilization?

Dont worry, I live in a conservative town in Utah and there is an out lesbian teacher at my high school that nobody would dream of firing, etc. Teachers often comment that she is one of the best teachers in the state.
