4,000-Plus Sign Anti-Pope Petition

More than 4,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that the Catholic Church, and not taxpayers, pay the cost of Pope Benedict XVI’s planned visit to the United Kingdom later this year. The action was sparked in par, by a papal speech earlier this week criticizing pro-gay equality legislation in the U.K., The Times of London reports.

“The taxpayer in this country is going to be faced with a bill of £20 million for the visit of the pope, a visit in which he has already indicated that he will attack equal rights and promote discrimination,” said Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, which has organized the petition.

On Monday the pope confirmed that he would be making the first papal trip to the U.K. since 1982. In making the announcement to 35 English and Welsh bishops who were visiting Rome, he criticized a proposed law that would consolidate into one law more than 40 years of antidiscrimination reforms. The proposal would remove the ability of churches and schools to use religious freedom as an argument against hiring gay and transgendered people.

“Your country is well known for its firm commitment to equality of opportunity for all members of society,” he said. “Yet ... the effect of some of the legislation designed to achieve this goal has been to impose unjust limitations on the freedom of religious communities to act in accordance with their beliefs.

“In some respects it actually violates the natural law upon which the equality of all human beings is grounded and by which it is guaranteed.”

Gay rights activist Peter Tatchell said the pope’s comments were a direct attack on equal rights for gay people. “His ill-informed claim that our equality law undermines religious freedom suggests that he supports the right of churches to discriminate in accordance with their religious ethos,” Tatchell said. “He seems to be defending discrimination by religious institutions and demanding that they should be above the law.”

This pig was a member of Hitler Youth. A Nazi who still promotes Nazi like repression of freedom. You would think that someone who bills himself/herself as the moral authority for the world would have had the morals to refuse to fight for Hitler, but no. His church is evil. I have just returned from Latin America where I stayed at a gay hotel. Another guest at the hotel was a Catholic priest who actually collects money from his parish in New York to "help the poor" in Latin America. That money he spends on his sex tricks. He laughs about it, but , of course, he still says being gay is wrong. Something he hates but can't help. It is time to reject this church and the horrible old drag queen who heads it.

Religions who feel compelled to participate in politics should be subject to taxation just like every other business out there. Why should the good people of the UK pay for the visit of a religious dictator? The Catholic church has more resources worldwide than many countries and yet they can't just sell a few papist items to finance the cost of his trip? Really, how prevalent is catholicism in England? And I definitely with you intolerance from SF! These people who think rising above means to value a moron's oppressive and hateful indignities need to reeval what they want out of life. I want freedom and equality!

My religion espouses the hunting down of Roman Catholic Popes and flaying them while they are still alive, then pouring salt on their wounds and letting them die, several pain-wracked days later. Gee, it just doesn't seem fair there are laws against that. WHERE IS MY RELIGIOUS FREEDOM?

@chuck in Dallas, your "tolerance for everything" is asinine. If Hitler were alive today would you be tolerant of him? Stalin? Pol Pot? How about Fred Phelps carrying a "God Hates Fags" sign, at the funeral for your mother, because she birthed a gay son? Would you be tolerant of HIM? What you namby-fucking-pamby PC idiots who espouse unconditional tolerance just don't seem to understand is that our TOLERANCE of INTOLERANCE is what has kept us in the state we're in. It's like that nice comfy little closet we all came out of. It shields us from having to take responsibility & ownership of the fight for Gay Civil Rights. We can be tolerant of Christians who are slowly dismantling our rights because direct confrontation of their delusional hocus pocus superstitions is somehow considered rude or unseemly. BULLSHIT! These people are our fucking enemies! WAKE THE FUCK UP! You feel that knife going into your gut & yet you are tolerant... PATHETIC! Grow some balls, chuck.
