Gay Valentine's Day Cards New to India

indiax390.jpg

In recognition of the first Valentine’s Day since the Delhi high court decriminalized gay sex in July, the largest card chain in India is selling greetings tailored to same-sex romance.

According to DNA, “Archies has stacked the shelves of 500 stores across big cities as well as small towns with five different Valentine’s Day cards for gays and lesbians ahead of February 14.”

An Archies spokesman said the company had been considering the idea for a while, but the court decision, viewed as a reflection of growing acceptance of gay people, prompted the move now.

DNA reports that Archies is offering “two cards for gay men, two for lesbians and one gender-neutral card,” with basic wording.

“A lesbian version says: ‘For my girl friend from your girl friend.’ The gender-neutral card reads: “Oh how totully gay!’”

India was never that homophobic in the first place. One need only read the Wikipedia article about Hinduism and homosexuality. Homosexuality is rarely condemned,if at all,in traditional Hindu writings. Hinduism has 4 genders. It's a very different way of thinking. The British Empire brought homophobia to India.

I wish the gays of India well. Back in 1996, my coming out to a friend while in Calcutta, initially ignored, led to an angry outburst insisting I go out and buy some girly magazines and that too much studying had gone to my head. It may be too late to change my friend's thinking, but hopefully times will be better for those growing up gay today.
