West Virginia Leaders Battle Gay Marriage

Tim Armstead X390 (GRAB WVPB) | ADVOCATE.COM

West Virginia already has a statute banning same-sex marriage, but state leaders — Democratic and Republican — say it doesn't go far enough and are pushing for a constitutional amendment.

Both the Democratic majority leader and GOP minority leader, Tim Armstead (pictured), of the state's house of delegates support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Armstead is pushing for a proposed bill to leave the committee to which it is currently assigned and be discussed on the house floor.

"A number of states throughout the country have recognized homosexual marriage and we think we need a safeguard to keep that from happening here and we think the people of West Virginia want that safeguard," Armstead told West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

Nobody here hates the LGBT community in West Virginia, or at least I hope they don't. I think most people's comments are directed at the backward legislature of that state. When will main stream media start talking about these injustices. All LGBT people should boycott CNN, MSNBC, and the rest for continuing to turn a deaf ear to our cause.

I need to add that anyone who thinks that gay people leave nasty comments should go on other news websites and read the comments. We are not less tolerant or nastier than the population as a whole.

Frank, haven't you read any of the previous comments? I guess since you are from Texas, I should tell you to go style your sister up a beehive hairdo for the beauty pageant.

Thanks for your comment, Kate O'Hanlan! Your text is a very good summary of the basics, knowledge that should be obligatory for everybody who wants to participate in a discussion about civil rights. But you know what? It could be too difficult to understand for the average bigot politician - in WV and elsewhere. And that's not your fault.

Hey all of you West Virginia sister-f***ers listen up: gay marriage is coming whether u like it or not!!!! I am sick of illiterate inbred white trash like these idiots try to take away our freedoms. F***ing your mother and your sister is "family values" but I guess heaven forbid there be loving consenting partnerships between adults of the same gender. These hicks can go jump in a coal mine. F***ers.

What's most irritating to me about this is that use of the world 'Safeguard'. They have to 'safeguard' themselves from the wicked homos who have the audacity to somehow feel just as entitled to constitutional protection as the heterosexuals who brought us into this world. I hope like hell that Olsen and Boies are successful because without this type of discrimination ruled unconstitutional our cause is essentially lost. West Virginia; what a piece of shit.

Wow. I'm not surprised by the comments. Our.LGB community is nothing if not hypocritical. They get pissed about a minor stereotype in a superbowl ad, and then stereotype others. Pot meet kettle.

Wow, I wish I could say I was shocked at the disgusting comments directed at people from WV. I'm a little shocked to read it here of all places, but I guess assholes come in all flavors. You do realize WV, especially the bigger cities, have a large LGBT population? How about joining with us instead of tearing us down? To my neighbors here in WV, screw the dem and rep leaders, and screw the people who mock us for where we live.
