DADT Poll: 57% for Gays Serving Openly

DON'T ASK DON'T TELL DADT GENERIC ART X390 (PHOTOS.COM) | ADVOCATE.COM

A new Quinnipiac University national poll shows majorities of American voters think gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the military and that the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy constitutes discrimination.

According to the poll, voters surveyed said that gays should be allowed to serve openly by a margin of 57% to 36%. Respondents also said that DADT is discrimination by a margin of 66% to 31%.

However, by a 54% to 38% margin, voters said that gays in the military should face restrictions on exhibiting their sexual orientation on the job.

Also, voters from military households sounded less enthusiastic about ending DADT, with a margin of 48% to 47%. Support for repeal was highest among Democrats at 72% to 23%, followed by independents at 56% to 37%. Republican voters opposed repeal by 53% to 40%.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,617 registered voters nationwide from February 2 to 8 with a margin of error of +/- 1.9 percentage points. Find the full results here.

If we are to repeal the DADT policy, why don't we go a bit further. If gays can serve openly and live together, why shouldn't we just make all barracks co-ed. The diversion preventing the completion of the mission between GAYS would be no worse if females and males could share the same quarters, showers and everything else. Or do we plan for the GAYS all to have individual rooms with a private bath??

I don't think it's ethical that gays even have to WORRY about being asked about their sexuality. Does a gay man die quicker than a heterosexual man? A gay man is afraid to go into combat but aren't we all? Are gay men any less happy about winning a battle than heterosexual men? Washington needs to realize that this policy is ridiculous and was made by a biggot in 1994. The Policy also greatly weakens our military's strength. I mean, gay people don't have any control over the fact that they're gay, it isn't a choice. Think about it: If you were required to be a certain way to learn to play an instrument, and you weren't born that way, wouldn't you be extremely upset that you couldn't play that instrument? Give THAT a thought and then start talking.

"Voters said that gays in the military should face restrictions on exhibiting their sexual orientation on the job?" There is already a Standards of Conduct in place. What restrictions should apply to gays that doesn't already apply to heteros? People, there are already gays in the military. Repealing DADT is not going to turn the military into some modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. People- gay and straight- are going to continue to live their lives- only without having to lie about it, and without being persecuted for it.

I am sick of polls. Actions speak louder than words. Polls were encouraging in almost every issue that we have lost. No vote/support from me if this second class status is allowed to continue.

Then how are the members of Congress serving their constituents by not repealing the unconstitutional DADT NOW before the Republicans take control of Congress and it dead? Why do they continue wasting our tax dollars and weakening the military by continuing this insane policy for another year?

I wonder what the polls would say for allowing freedom of speech or banning slavery… maybe we should put up all of our rights to survey’s and polls. Maybe even vote to get to see if minorities should be allowed to be full citizens. 20 years I served in the US military. I was only asked if I was gay a few times. The entire time I was in I never saw two gay or lesbian people having sex in military spaces. I saw hetrosexual people having sex. Tried to write them up and was shot down every time because ‘that comes naturally’. Makes me wonder about the whole thing. Quite frankly, if they want to be cannon fodder I’ll let them.
