I have been through so much unhappiness in life that I can really sit back and appreciate people who go after their dreams. Take care and dont let the other comments get you down.

This person does the trangender community and transsexuals so much harm. She is a female not a male. She doesnt meet any of the attributes of a MtF Transsexual. As others have said she is just an attention seeker and this paper is suckered into giving it to her. Is this how she makes a living? selling her story? At a time when people are trying to understand trangender and transsexuals, she is merely confussing people and building resentment. She is doing the Trans community so much harm. Not a man. She has double X chromosones, not XY, therefore a woman. "Thomas" is a woman on male hormone therapy with a double mastectomy. Calling a circle a square doesn't make it so.

I doubt anyone is really reading comments here anymore, but I just wanted to make a few points. Kay, the experts and the practitioners who help treat those who are transsexual do not feel it's in any way akin to BDD. However, even if it IS similar, it in no way makes the struggle for transgender/transsexual rights any less legitimate than the rights of those who aren't heterosexual. As I've said time and time again here, we're united under a single moniker because we're fighting for a universal cause: equality. We just so happen to all be related by something that involves our gender, sex and/or sexuality. Are you really unable to see this? One would think that people who were victims of oppression and discrimination would be more accepting and understanding of other victimized minorities and their struggles, especially when those struggles are similar. Unfortunately, it seems such experiences serve to teach prejudice and bigotry more than tolerance and acceptance.

I stand by my earlier comments. I think it's way past time for these splinter groups to cut their umbilical cords. They're doing their own thing anyway and wish to be labeled as such, so I don't get it. Why try to squeeze back under this umbrella when it suits you? Furthermore, my girlfriend's a doctor and she says the trans crowd (as in taking hormones and having surgery) has more to do with extreme BDD (Body dysmorphic disorder) than ANYTHING else. It's absurd to think that the gay community should encompass every sexual "lifestyle" that differs from hetero sex. Some people might think that I'm exaggerating, but I don't think so, it's really come to that. I think LGB's have one mindset and the other fringe groups have quite another. Personally, I don't know any militant/politically rabid lesbians, gays or bisexuals. Most of that comes with the fringe groups, and that's all fine if that's what THEY want to do...just don't try to make this one big happy family when it isn't.

@Tom: There's transgender and there's transsexual. They're not the same thing, though most transsexual people are included under the transgender umbrella, the transgender community includes a lot of people, some of whom are only similar in that they are gender variant. Not everyone wants sex reassignment surgery, and not all who want it can get it. However, as I've already said before, T is part of LGB so that similar issues are tackled for all people who are facing similar discrimination and oppression at the hands of the heterosexual/heteronormative/cisgender majority. Much of society sees us and treats us the same, so it makes sense for us to increase our strength through numbers to achieve equality for all of us. Or do you only support equality for yourself and those like you, but not everyone else? And re: marriage for transsexual persons, yeah, sometimes they can get married, sometimes they can't. The laws vary from state to state. It's not that hard to research, you know
