Kate Winslet to Remake Mildred Pierce

KATE WINSLET JOAN CRAFORD MILDRD PIERCE X390 (GETTY FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Kate Winslet will star in the remake of Mildred Pierce, reports Entertainment Weekly. It’s been rumored for months that the Academy Award-winning actress will slip into the Depression-era waitress duds and tackle the role that won Joan Crawford her only Oscar, and HBO has officially confirmed the speculation. Out director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven,Poison) will helm the cable production, a five-hour adaptation of the classic James M. Cain novel. The 1945 film version is a favorite among gay viewers for its snappy dialogue and the sizzling depiction of the tempestuous relationship between a working-class woman and the ungrateful, upwardly mobile daughter to whom she is neurotically devoted.

I love Kate Winset, but this remake is terrible. How can a haggered, wimpy, unmotivated woman possibley become a restauranter? Joan Crawford portrayed a beautiful, highly passionate woman who strived for a better life for her family. The passion for bettering the life of her children and ultimately her only her child, lead to her downfall. Mildred knew what she wanted. She wasn't a crier or a foul mouth, she was a doer and a strong enough woman who would not let herself be taken advantage of by a man unless it was her idea. Five segments! This is the remake is all wrong. Even the eldest daughter who has her own agenda...she is not the wanna be sophisicate who can charm and manipulate. She's way too childish. The lingering question is, why are all these characters lifeless and lacking character? I loved Eve Arden's wit and sarcasim. The original movie's actors all brought something special to their performaces, that's why it's such a timeless piece of art with a valuable moral

There was and will only will be one Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford) so let her and the film rest in peace, although Joan would be thrilled to know that they are still talking about her.

Kate is wonderful, but I don't see her in this film. How about doing something new? Joan won her oscar and never said shit or f-ck once in the film. How many times will Kate be saying those words in the new version? Of course there will have to be bedroom shots too I guess. The key to the original was there was room for us to do some of the thinking. Why not leave classic Hollywood alone? If they must do this film over I hope Ann Blyth will get a spot in it.

To Kevin from San Francisco: Dude, the film was released in 1945/ There's no way it was set post-WW2. Do you really think Mildred Pierce was set in the future??? I disagree with most of you. I think it could be really interesting. Todd Haynes is not a cookie-cutter film director. He;ll do something different with the material.

Sacrilege! As talented as she may be, she isn't worthy of Joan's shoulderpads.

Can't they make something original? Must they keep remaking things? There are so many books that haven't been made into movies, or God forbid, hire someone to write an original screenplay! Whatever Hollywood, I won't be watching your stupid remake.
