Harold Ford to Address NYC Gay Group

Potential U.S. Senate candidate Harold E. Ford Jr. will address the New York City chapter of the Stonewall Democratic Club next Wednesday, in an appearance that gay activists are promising to disrupt.

Ford, a former Tennessee congressman, has come under fire in recent weeks for his two votes in support of a federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. He now says he supports marriage equality.

A past Stonewall president and board member told the New York Daily News that Ford will be walking into a “lion’s den” at the LGBT Community Center in Manhattan.

"A lot of people don't like him, and I have a feeling they're going to be a little hostile," Marty Algaze told reporter Liz Benjamin.

The appearance will provide Ford with an opportunity to take questions and clarify his positions. The club also plans to announce a date to host Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, the favored candidate among gay Democrats, particularly for her push on "don't ask, don't tell" repeal.

New York gay activists led by a group called The Power have created a Facebook  page to "Crash Harold Ford, Jr.'s Address to Stonewall Democrats NYC.”

Here we go again, repeating the same action while hoping for a different outcome. Isn't it getting a bit tiresome watching these politicians come crawling for votes after bad voting records and slipshod support of the GLBT community? Let Mr. Ford go develop his GLBT support on his own time, build up his resume and then come to the community for votes. We're supposed to support a candidate who has not in the past shown much support but says in the future he will? Prove yourself Mr. Ford and then you have earned the right to ask for the GLBT vote.

I agree with Mark on this one. We as a community can take the 'high road' and give this politician some leeway. We may need him someday. He can certainly be challenged and disagreed with, but not in a disruptive manner such as last summers tirade of poor citizenship demonstrated in those town meetings. We can certainly express our disfavor of his past examples and question his sincerity of today's. Even if he did pass the test I personally would vote for the present senator. She is walking the walk and actively now working on the DADT issue. That is more then what Ford is or has done. Your vote is the final proof of your beliefs.

Ford expects New Yorkers to believe that he reversed his position not because it's politically necessary here, but because of his trophy wife's dead gay step-uncle. He's full of shit and doesn't deserve any support.

I'm voting for Gillibradt, but I think it's rude to do anything but welcome Ford to speak at the Center. Yes, he voted against same sex civil marriage equality in the past, but supposedly due to talking with his wife's gay family members he has changed his position. We don't have to vote for him, but can't we show the man some common curtesy in hopes he might have become enlightened? Rather than revolt against Ford, we should be revolting against the Democrats (and of course all the Republicans) who still are against same sex civil marriage equality for born gay/lesbian taxpayers (who pay their salaries and family benefits). the 7 Democrats in the NY Senate who voted against same sex civil marriage (and the 30 Republicans) should be the target of our rage and revolt.
