Gay Gladiator Love on Spartacus

SPARTACUS BLOOD AND SAND SCREENGRAB X390

Starz’s Spartacus: Blood & Sand makes no apologies for being overt with its sexual overtones, nudity and gore. But on this week’s episode, the show got good and gay, with two gladiators “coming out” by making out in front of their crew.

In fairness, two male gladiators were seen having sex in last week’s episode ... but as OhLaLaMag.com points out, that happened within the confines of a gladiator cage ... a gladiator cage with no walls, mind you, but a cage nonetheless.

OhLaLa has more images of the gladiators expressing their love out in the open ... some of the photos on this page are NSFW.

Keith is right (I majored in ancient history). However, neither character is Roman, both are slaves, and the action did not take place in public.

Ah, what fodder for sexual fantasies! We ought to have more opportunities to dress up in Roman attire and make out with each other in public. Too bad while every other aspect of humanity has evolved and transformed our society, sexually and emotionally we have been scared into hiding our authentic love (or lust, for that matter).

With all due apologies to Bob, I watched two episodes of "Spartacus" and said, "No more." The show is pure dreck. Sure, there's plenty of eye candy but if the stories aren't engaging enough, I'm not going to bother. Unlike SOME people (like Mark from Wappinger Falls), I don't feel a need to support a show that shows LGBT characters if the show doesn't entertain me beyond the "ooh, look--gay folks in the house" manner. If I find a show entertaining and it just *happens* to have LGBT characters or storylines, then great. But, please, I'm watching to be entertained. If I want to see some "gay" guys hooking up and making out, I can watch full-length porn (or rewatch "Queer as Folk").

This comment is for Dan. As a History Major and a fan of Roman History I have to correct you. Rome was not very accepting of same sex relationships and had very harsh views of people in the passive role. The ultimate political attack in Ancient Roman society was to say that a politician was in the passive role. While it was common for men to engage in sex with other men, the idea of gays or lesbians was unheard of and very few respectable people were known to have relationships with their same sex lovers and when they did it was looked on with scandal. Further more after the rise of the Christian Eastern Empire sex acts labled sodomy were outlawed across most of Europe. I am a fan of ancient history because there was not as much disgust as there is now when it comes to same sex actions however to say that the ancients were fine with it or to even imply that is incorrect unless you are talking about Ancient Greece and even then it depended on the time period.

Since Spartacus takes place in 1st century Rome, it makes sense that two male Romans, and probably two female Romans as well, would make out openly. Same-sex relationships were very open in Rome and were accorded about the same respect as opposite-sex relationships. John Boswell did the most thorough investigation of this in his book, Same-Sex Unions in Pre-Modern Europe. Same-sex nuptials were accepted in Europe until about the 17th century.
