Colbert "Queen" at Olympic Pride House

STEPHEN COLBERT PROMO PIC COMEDY CENTRAL X390

Stephen Colbert swung by the Olympic Pride House in Vancouver to talk all things gay and athletic while filming footage of the Winter Games for his TV show, The Colbert Report.

The Huffington Post reports that Colbert's appearance was done almost in secret — only two dozen or so people looked on as he chatted with Pride House director Jennifer Breakspear. In the interview Colbert asked whether LGBT was a kind of sandwich and discussed new uses for this year's Olympic pride pins.

Breakspear told Colbert the pride pin she gave him would make him queer for a day. Colbert asked if he could instead be "queen for a day."

Footage from Colbert's visit to the Pride House is expected to air on The Colbert Report.

Don, get with the program. We homos reclaimed the word "queer" like 20 years ago (see "Queer Nation"). Now we use it with pride. I wish we'd do the same thing with "faggot" instead of being so damn thin-skinned.

The debate over the word QUEER has mostly disappeared in Vancouver, as our Queer Film Festival is a huge success the community centre has been rebranded as "Qmunity". In Vancouver we have many others in our queer community besides gay and lesbian. Two-spirited, transgendered etc that do not iddentify with the gay or lesbian labels. Also, identifying as queer makes it easier to not disclose ones actual sexuality, or gender or gender reassignment. This label has been settled upon to reclaim a word formerly used to harm us, and to be the only word that is inclusive without being an alphabet soup acronym. The oldest generations will likely never embrace the term, as they fought hard to bring our rights to where they are today. I just hope that they realize that it is not meant to diminish their accomplishments. Queer at The Olympics, Vancouver. @realtorblair

@Don Charles, you might want to stay out of Canada then as you will likely see the use of the word Queer in several places. It is only a word which is a lot handier than saying Gays and Lesbians all the time. You forget in Canada Gays and Lesbians have full equality, we have the right to marry, and recieve all the same benefits from all levels of government that str8s do. A word only has power if you allow it to, here we have chosen to own the word so that it cannot hurt us. So maybe you were offended by the lesbian using the word, but in Canada it meant nothing as there was no derogatory intent.

I agree with "queer" not being a negative word for a member of our community to use. It's even incorporated in many of the designations i.e. GLBTQQ. I'm of a generation where one may have been offended, but come on we are living in 2010, aren't we?

Don, if you still get offended when you see one of our own community use the word "queer", you need to get out more. Kansas City can't be that backward that this is so new to you...?

    Comment:

Using Queer in this situation is not offensive, the term is now being used by the gay community as a positive or neutral descriptive of each other. By embracing a word that was used to attack or degrade, the gay community has demagnetized the strength of the word, making it a common everyday term. This lessens the effect of the word when used against them.

I love Stephen Cobert. I always wondered if he explains to the people that he interviews ahead of time (who are unfamiliar with him) that he is playing a character spoofing TV's conservative blow-hards. He says some things that would make most people's head spin. That clip explains why most people keep their cool when they are on camera with him.

"Queer for a day"? I have a sense of humor, but that's not funny. It's offensive, and it doesn't matter that a Lesbian said it.

I forgot about that, he did play a gay character in Strangers didn't he? He was hillariously closeted though.

I love that Stephen plays a conservative character in order to skewer the Republican Right. He's been an honorary queer since his Strangers With Candy days. Love him!!!
