CPAC Poll: Gay Marriage Not Priority

Poll x390 (Photos.com) | Advocate.com

The social conservative agenda appeared to take a hit in straw poll results over the weekend from the Conservative Political Action Conference. Only 1% of respondents said that stopping gay marriage ranked as their top priority in results that revealed a decidedly libertarian streak, with Ron Paul picked as the 2012 presidential favorite.

According to Hot Air, students and people age 25 and under constituted the majority of respondents, which suggests the poll holds even more implications for the years ahead than the present day:

“Granted, students comprised 48 percent of the sample — how else could Paul have won? — but that might be less significant as evidence that the poll’s an outlier than as evidence that it may not be such an outlier a few years from now. (More than half the votes cast in the poll were by those 25 years old or younger.)”

Respondents picked Paul, a Texas congressman and 2008 presidential candidate, as their 2012 presidential favorite with 31%, ahead of last year’s pick, Mitt Romney, who received 22%. Sarah Palin took 7% and Tim Pawlenty won 6%.

The antigay agenda seemed to take a nosedive in another poll question, according to Hot Air, where only 9% said their most important goal was to promote traditional values by protecting “traditional” marriage and the lives of the unborn. In contrast, 80% listed their top goal as protecting individual liberty by reducing the size and shape of government.

The poll was criticized for surveying only 2,935 respondents, the majority of them young, out of 10,000 CPAC registrants.

Actually, I believe Ron Paul's position on gay marriage is the same as his position on most things. Its no business of the federal government to decide who you can marry. That's a decision left to churches, consenting adults and the communities in which they live. Ron Paul truly does believe in peace, freedom and prosperity.....once folks get past all the MSM coverage and really investigate the man, most will find that he's practically Ghandi Esque in his reverence for compassion.

It's still wrong to be conservative. As an oppressed minority, we should identify with all oppressed minorities, including and especially the poor. Since conservatives abuse and exploit the poor, if we begin to identify with them, we will be no better than other minorities who are opposed to equality for our community. I think free healthcare, preserving the right to abortion, and getting us out of the war should be as much a part of the gay agenda as gay marriage. Still, it's nice to hear that opposition is waning.

The libertarian bent of the younger CPAC attendees should be an encouraging sign for us. The Cato Institute, the main libertarian think tank, published a paper on same-sex marriage several years ago that is included the best and clearest arguments in favor that I have seen. Little wonder then that many of our gay brothers and lesbian sisters are attracted to this way of thinking, though Paul, I believe, is still opposed to gay marriage on "moral" grounds.

What right do these fascist holier than thou religious folks have to tell us who can or can not get married? They are themselves not married or getting married to a person of the same sex. This is a violation of the US Constitution's Bill of Rights and court rulings. This country was founded on the principal of being FREE of religion and its influence ---separation of Church and State. The imposition of one or more religious factions views is a violation of these rights. The right to worship as one pleases is tolerated within the law but one may not offer a sacrificial virgin to a volcano or indulge (like the fundamentalist Mormons) in blood atonement simply because a person--- usually female is thought to be so evil that the only way to atone for their sins is to be murdered even though the OT Law of Moses says "thou shalt not kill". Let us kick the church, its lobbiests out of Government where they have no right to belong or be there.

Why is NOT same sex marriage a priority?? Just how valid was this survey and did they have a cross section in the total poll and just who did they poll---straight Mormons et al? Irregardless of the opinions of the polled folks and how skewed the results were----the Civil and Human rights of the people should always take precedence over other matters in the arena of life. I assume the people polled do not and have never read the Constitution of the United States and probally flunked American History and Government Classes. This is one of the shameful states of American Education in all the States and Territories. I am deepy concerned for the future of the US because of the ignorance of people who allowed such things as Bush II to take away their rights of Habeas Corpus and kidnap inncocent folks and wisk them away in the dead of night to be tortured in a foreign country then dumped and told get back home the best way you can (a violation of a law of 1796).

From the article: "The poll was criticized for surveying only 2,935 respondents, the majority of them young, out of 10,000 CPAC registrants." And just how many of those great "nationwide surveys" conducted by the NYT and AP and other outfits even survey that many? Most of the great publicized surveys only ask 1000-1500 people, and here we have a poll that surveyed 2-3 times the "standard" number, and it's getting flack from folks who (apparently) don't agree with the results.

we'll see since stopping same sex marriage from happening seems to be on many people's minds like the Mormon Church and Focus Family Groups. Yet they don't show up for that kind of mobilization for poverty...hmm interesting. A little backwards if you ask me.

Since same sex civil marriage equality doesn't matter to straight people, why do they have the legal right to decide its fate via ballot initiatives? Also, why do they want Ron Paul as president who like all Republican candidates is a radical right wing fundamentalist Christian bent on spitting on the US Constitution by denying same sex civil marriage equality?

I think you miss the point of this article Brady. The poll shows younger CPAC attendees were more focused on their own freedom than denying other people their freedom. I think that is a good trend for us, since it means the younger crowd is not interested in continuing the crusades against us.

I'm a Ron Paul supporter and I support gay marriage. So seeing Ron Paul win the CPAC straw poll and hearing some dolts in the audience boo upon that revelation, I know we still have a lot of work to do in garnering the support of people who believe in social liberty and fiscal conservatism.
