College Wrestler Champions Gay Rights

University of Maryland wrestler Hudson Taylor is ranked number 3 in the country in the 197-pound NCAA wrestling weight class, recently became engaged to his girlfriend, and is a huge supporter of gay rights.

Taylor sat down for an interview with Outsports.com in which he talks about proposing to his girlfriend after the two watched Milk, wrestling with a Human Rights Campaign sticker on his helmet and why he is often labeled gay for voicing his opinion on LGBT issues.

"For me and my generation, [LGBT rights] is a pressing issue," the 23-year-old wrestler told Outsports. "I believe that whatever history I'm a part of, I'm responsible for. If I feel something is unjust or unequal, I feel a responsibility to do something about it."

Taylor makes it a point to say that he doesn’t have any close family members or friends who are gay, though two maids of honor who are scheduled to be in the wedding are in a relationship. He says his passion for gay rights is more about righting a wrong than standing up for anyone in particular.

Taylor is majoring in interactive performance art at the University of Maryland and says his senior thesis will likely have something to do with LGBT issues. He is due to compete at the NCAA wrestling championships March 18-20 in Omaha.

Stories like this really move me. Thanks Hudson Taylor. I hope The Advocate continues to let us know about people like him. I bet they're everywhere and nowhere at once, because their stories so often go untold. When they no longer inspire us, their work for us will be done.

Polls showing that growing numbers in each new generation reject the prejudice and bigotry that denies LGBT people their civil rights, and even their dignity, give us hope that someday we will have equality. As more and more heterosexual Americans, who like this young man, have the courage to stand-up publicly for LGBT rights, for no other reason than it IS right, we may dare to hope that that day is coming soon, that what we are seeing now is the beginning of the end of bigotry, that this is the generation that will keep America's historic promise to its all citizens, as proclaimed more than 200 years ago in those powerful and beautiful words that are ingrained in the memory of every schoolchild "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal."

Hear, hear. This young man represents the future of our nation where, to paraphrase MLK, the content of a person's character is NOT determined by who their nature tells them to love. He should be applauded for his dedication to a greater social responsibility. His parents must be proud indeed to have raised such a principled person. Congratulations.

This is so great to hear and see. Being gay is not an issue for the younger generation. I teach college and it is just another way of liviing. Younger gays and lesbians have more role models for family structure, bankiing, living, etc rather than the steriotypic decorator or hair stylist made fun of on t.v. Even the young republicans told old republicans gay marriage is not an issue to people under 30. Times they are a chaning. Congratulations to this young man and to his parents for rearing such a great and open young adult. Pass this story along to everyone you can.
