Hamill and Weir Talk Olympic Image

DOROTHY HAMILL JOHNNY WEIR X390

Johnny Weir’s critics suggest the skater’s flamboyant costumes and in-your-face attitude paint a bad image for the winter games. But Weir sat down with Access Hollywood contributor and Olympic gold medalist Dorothy Hamill to say he pays no mind to the French-Canadian sportscasters who said "we should make [Weir] pass a gender test at this point."

“Every little boy should be so lucky as to turn into me,” he told Hamill. “And that’s all I have to say about that.”

Hamill looks visibly upset when repeating the sportscaster’s comments to Weir. The Quebec Council of Gays and Lesbians filed a complaint against sportscasters Claude Mailhot and Alain Goldberg of the RDS network over the weekend for their comments.

Weir placed sixth in last week’s long form program. Had he placed fifth, he would have skated to Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” in the post-competition gala this coming Saturday. Gaga had promised Weir she would attend.

I am proud of Johnny Weir for having the guts to be himself. It takes courage to be authentic, especially if authenticity, for you, goes against the norm. Susan Gabriel author of Seeking Sara Summers a novel about coming out later in life

Raphael, Mr. Weirs performance skills are not the issue here. Just as the commentators remarks had nothing to do with Mr. Weirs performance.

As a French speaking Canadian I admire M. Weir for his difference, as most Canadians do. These are 2 journalists who are not the reflection of Canadians. Canada is very progressive as a Country. Gay Marriage, Gay couples can adopt , gays in the military not even an issue here, and we have the strongest hate laws in the world. We are 35 million people across Canada so having 2 jerks talk trash is not the end of the world. In Canada we are all equal with equal rights.

Just before the Prop 8 vote, Elizabeth Hasselback and Sherry Shepard both misled viewers by stating that Religious institutions could be forced to perform gay marriages if Prop 8 did not pass. They also brought up the issue of kids being taught about homosexuality in schools. I remember watching it and wanting to strangle both of them and the View producers for allowing such misinformation to reach the airwaves. Elizabeth Hasselback is not a friend to the gay community.

If the Advocate kept up with anything, it wpould have reported that the two announcers are no longer reporting at the Olympic venues, they happen to work for a corporation which takes gay issues seriously, the parent network CTV actually broadcast Queer as Folk uncencored on the main network not hidden on some pay for view channel. While Weir is flamboyant and different he was not as technically skilled as the russian or as artistic as the gold medal winner. He reminds me of Toller Cranston back in the 70's, another sexually obvious skater who was flash but when you got down to the technical details was weak. And as for him performing his Lady Gaga routine, what all he can come up with for the Olympics is a rerun. Everybody has seen the act and it wasn't that hot. Johnny is flamboyant but he is not daring, once he has a fairly successful routine he flogs it to death, that is part of the problem, he didn't show originality, he skated the same program as before.

This is in regards to the comment posted earlier that Elizabeth Hasselbeck of "The View" fame is "anti-gay." I watch The View regularly and while I do not agree with most of Elizabeth's political view points I do not recall a time where she has ever been "anti-gay," often I think she makes comments that are supportive of LGBT equality. It could be she may only support civil-unions versus marriage, otherwise to label her anti-gay is completely unfair, especially with her recent comments (and her husband's as well) that gays serving openly in the military is "a non-issue" and should be allowed to them as well as friends of theirs who are gay and/or have served in the military.

Oh fred. Sweet, silly silly fred. You didn’t answer my questions. You just changed the subject two more times with low brow reactionary insults that weren’t particularly clever. Feel free to comment again when you have an answer. Here’s another question you prolly won’t answer: Who’s fighting your battle for gay rights? Cause you don’t seem to be winning many of the big battles. Anyways, gotta run. Have to get back to my boring country. Plus, I have to get back to my husband, who’s in the armed forces (out of the closet, of course). Been married a few years now (thank goodness no one with lots of hate and money can take or vote that away from us up here). Have to have a meeting with our son’s teacher (thank goodness adoption was never denied us) and have an afternoon meeting with our financial advisor to discuss our pensions (of which each of us is the other’s beneficiary, of course … it’s a given here).

It would seem that these commentators should GROW UP and move into the 21st century!! HOW RUDE!! They should be fired & banned from the station totally! Yes, Johnny is flamboyant but all skaters are entitled to skate in their own fashion & style. That includes the Pairs skaters, Male skaters, Female skaters, and Ice Dance skaters too! Leave the guy alone media - He is a great skater, unique and he does his own thing - GOOD ON HIM!!
