Who Are the Best Gay TV Characters?

VINTAGE TELEVISION X390 (PHOTOS.COM) | ADVOCATE.COM

Will or Jack from Will & Grace? Xena or Gabrielle from Xena? AfterElton is conducting a reader poll on the top 50 gay and bisexual male TV characters of all time, while AfterEllen is asking for the top 50 lesbian and bisexual female TV characters of all time.

The websites are taking votes from readers on all gay and bi television characters, from Sidney in Love, Sidney and Bette in The L Word to more recent characters like Mitchell on ABC's Modern Family and Kalinda on The Good Wife. Voting will be open until midnight March 5, with the top 50 announced March 15.

Click here to vote for the men and here to vote for the women.

Editor's note: AfterEllen.com's poll on the top 50 lesbian and bisexual female TV characters was sent to The Advocate for consideration after the headline on AfterElton.com's poll was already published.

It doesn't surprise me that the advocate it patriarchal...but with jazz hands *jazz hands* Jane Lynch trumps any of those tired bitches that were named in the article.

Dany, after about a week of reading and perusing The Advocate's website for the first time, it's clear that they don't seem to care about lesbians at all. They fail to live up to their name.

Brian Kinney? Damn, I thought I was offensive, but Kinney? For real? The character of Brian Kinney did not support same-sex marriage, did not believe in relationships, did not care about gay politics (until they closed his favorite bathhouse), participated in auto-erotic asphyxiation once, did drugs on a regular basis.... I mean, he was a great gay character, but best gay character? I don't think so.

We did read the post all the way through. After the editors were shamed by us (to the extent that they pulled my post down apparently) the piece was edited to include the AfterEllen poll. Note that the headline, referring only to male characters, remains unchanged.

I like how so many commenters on this site fail to thoroughly read posts and them blame The Advocate for their negligence. And yes, Brian Kinney FTW!
