Austin Men Targeted in Antigay Hate Crime

Austin-hate-crimex390

Two men in Austin, Texas say they were attacked downtown near city hall early Saturday morning because they were wearing t-shirts for their gay softball team.

Matt Morgan and Emmanuel Winston left the gay bar Oil Can Harry's around 2:30 a.m., and nearly reached a parking garage when Morgan felt a punch in the back of his head. He said he fought off one of four attackers yelling antigay slurs and saw the three others beating Winston.

The responding police officer checked the parking garage but could not find the attackers. Morgan and Winston have vowed to pursue their complaint all the way to hate crime charges.

Austin advocates plan to organize a walk through the downtown area to draw attention to the incident. They say this is the second attack near city hall in the past three years.
