Gay Couple Engagement Initiative Launched

ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

Two Bremerton, Wash., men, Karl Urseth and Michael Maria, who have been together for 23 years, have placed an announcement in the Kitsap Sun newspaper stating their intent to marry as soon as they are legally able to do so.

The couple placed the notice at the request of Ben, a commenter on the website for Seattle’s newspaper The Stranger, who encouraged readers to do so, writing, “Gay couples all across the country who would like to marry should get engaged and post their engagement in local newspapers, saying they plan to hold a ceremony 'as soon as it's legal.'"

I love the spirit of this idea, but couldn't it backfire on us? If there aren't many announcements, & worse, if a lot of newspapers refuse to run the announcements or unknowingly "correct" them to make them male-female, won't it emphasize that there aren't many same-sex couples seeking marriage? I can see the wingnuts offering up the relative dearth of announcements as reason for denying same-sex couples marriage rights.

This is just amazing. Considering that not that long ago interracial marriage was illegal, I would say it is about Our time to be treated as the first class citizens we are.

This is an excellent idea! The more we can expose the hypocrisy of marriage inequality in the United States, the better. My husband and I were able to legally marry here in Iowa last September, Thank God!
