Daniel Radcliffe Films Trevor Project PSA

DANIEL RADCLIFFE TREVOR PROJECT X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is starring in a public service announcement for the Trevor Project, the organization focused on suicide prevention for LGBT youths.

Radcliffe told the Associated Press he has never understood why people are prejudiced against gays and lesbians.

"I grew up knowing a lot of gay men and it was never something that I even thought twice about — that some men were gay and some weren't," the Harry Potter hottie said. "I have always hated anybody who is not tolerant of gay men or lesbians or bisexuals. Now I am in the very fortunate position where I can actually help or do something about it."

The PSA was filmed Friday at the Trevor Project's Wall Street offices and is scheduled to air in the spring.

The star told ABC News he was shocked when he first encountered homophobia in school.

"I think it's important for somebody from a big, commercial movie series like Harry Potter and particularly because I am not gay or bisexual or transgendered," Radcliffe said. "The fact that I am straight makes not a difference, but it shows that straight people are incredibly interested and care a lot about this as well."

What an ironic statement - "I've always hated those who weren't tolerant..."

I am so glad that someone str8 cares about our rights. I was closeted for a long time and coming out has been a real difficult process. But it's so worth it! I myslef tried to commit suicide and if that can be prevented from happening to other people by Mr. Radcliffes work it would be a great thing. Good job Daniel!!

It is such a pleasure to know that there are young actors out in the world today that care about something other than themselves. As for myself , being an older gay male I have had to live a life of being closeted and hiding from others the true me. This is not what life should be about, it should be a celebration of who we are and what we can do for each other and to make the world a better place to live in. Thank you Daniel Radcliff for your support of the many LGBT persons who I think would very much benefit from your PSA. Keep going strong and working to be the best that YOU can be to help us who are less fortunate. Mr. Bobby Hicks...

Harry Potter. we love you. After all, you have learned nothing but all goodness and the true meaning of love and acceptance from your dear mentor, Albus Dumbledore, who is himself gay.

Thomas, all he's saying is that one doesn't have to be a LGBT person to have a passionate interest in our rights. If he just stated out of the blue he's not gay or bi to some reporter it might be a little questionable but he's just saying that straight people care about LGBT rights too.

If it doesn't make a difference if you're gay or straight, why does Daniel have to make a point of saying he's straight?
