Memorial Honors Life of Gay Mormon

HENRY STUART MATIS X390 (FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Mormons and LGBT supporters gathered Thursday morning in Los Altos, Calif., to honor the memory of Henry Stuart Matis, a gay Mormon who committed suicide at a regional Mormon center in the city 10 years ago.  Matis, who shot himself outside the center on February 25, 2000, left a note explaining that "for the first time in over 20 years, I am free from my pains.

"As I believed that I was a Christian, I believed that I could never be gay," he wrote. "Perhaps my death ... might become the catalyst for much good ... Your actions might help to save many young people's lives."

Aabout 20 mourners marched with candles and roses up the road to the center, ending at the site of his death, the Mercury News reported. They set up a memorial display featuring an image of Matis's tombstone along with stories about his death and the tragic fates of other gay Mormons.

"The best way to honor Stuart, and avoid causing further hurt and grief to his family, is to take the time and effort to understand the difficult struggle the men and women who deal with this issue are going through, one by one, one person at a time," Matis's parents wrote in a statement. "As those who knew Stuart best, we can say with confidence that this is what Stuart would truly have wanted."

You know, Lee? It's people like you that breed homophobia. You should learn a little from Eric, at least he has integrity and doesn't go around bitching about hate while being hateful like you. As for being a member of the Klan? Puh-leeze, the Klan and the Neo-nazis are SOCIALISTS, Hitler himself gave the Germans jobs, free healthcare, and lots of goodies. Only difference between their socialism and modern progressives is the race aspect. Progressives like you claim to be color blind, yet anyone who disagrees with Obama is labeled a racist. Keep doing that and the American people are gonna think twice about voting for any minorities.

You know what really gets me? That in order to combat the supposed hatred of various organized religions, we ourselves fall back on hate-filled rhetoric. It seems hypocritical of us to be intolerant while attacking others about being intolerant. While I'm gay and don't agree with them, right now I feel bad for the Mormon Church. Not every member is against gay marriage and yet we lump them all together. I do hope that the church will change their standing on the issue of same-sex relations, but until that happens we shouldn't persecute them.

Bobby honey shouldn't you be at your Klan rally about this time? Maybe being Baptized by your homophobic, racist, bigoted Southern Baptist Republican minister? Remember him? The one who taught you to hate and be hated? He's the guy we saw on Oprah...sell him any meth lately. You make Australopithecus look like some sort of Future Aged God by comparison. Go away! You aren't fooling anyone with your multiple monikers and you reek of HATRED!

My personal opinion is that it doesn't matter whether or not God exists because nothing in my life will change as a result of that belief or lack thereof. Yes, the story of the Catholic Church is one of the bloodiest in human history, but the atrocities committed by 20th century communist governments are comparable. That religion has persisted for two millenia shows that it does provide something positive for many people. In theory, the moral guidance it provides to the individual has a stabilizing effect on society as a whole. Our founding fathers conceded this, and felt that religion and science informed and complemented each other. Obviously, this belief no longer persists. My heart goes out to the family and friends of this young man.

To paraphrase Dan Akroyd: "Bobby, you ignorant slut........." Christians would do the same to us and more in this country if they could. Shouldn't you turn off your computer and go to bed now so you can be the first one at church tomorrow morning?

Hey Dan, you do know that there are gay churches that take a different interpretation regarding the story of Lot? For example, he offered his virgin daughters because of hospitality concerns, in the middle east you're supposed to protect your guests even if it means letting your daughters get raped instead of them. Also, David and Jonathan certainly had something going on together, specially when David tells Jonathan that his love is superior to the love of women. As for atheism, if secular people are so great how come the USSR used to give gays electroshock therapy? Or why did China took so long to stop persecuting gays? Or why aren't gays in Cuba allowed to have gay bars (the only gay progress is Cuba is not being sent to a labor camp by Castro)? Or why did Vietnam punished two lesbians for getting a same-sex wedding at home?

I, too was raised in a very religious home. My Uncle and a cousin who were close to me both commited suicide. I became a non-beleiver when I studied what the bible really says about homosexuality. For example, the church has always called me a sodomite even though the story in Genesis is about attempted gang rape of complete strangers, and the man the bible calls "righteous Lot" trying to give both of his virgin teenage daughters to that crowd explicitly for sex. (He later impregnated both of them). The story of Sodom has nothing at all to do with consensual sex between adults! Christians just make that shit up!

Celia, you might want to do a grammar check before you criticize the sentence structure of others, because your post contains two sentence fragments. And these personal attacks/rants on people's belief in God do nothing to help you appear to be an intelligent, rational person. A person can't prove there is a God, but a person can't prove there ISN'T a God either--so it's just an endless, pointless argument.
