Baxter Takes Center Stage at HRC Dinner

MEREDITH BAXTER HRC DINNER SCREENGRAB X390

Meredith Baxter took center stage at the Human Rights Campaign Carolinas dinner in Raleigh, N.C., over the weekend. The 62-year-old actress made her first major address for an LGBT advocacy organization since coming out late last year.

Clay Aiken and HRC president Joe Solmonese also gave passionate speeches, but it was the Family Ties star, well-regarded for her public speaking tours on breast cancer awareness and her battle with alcoholism, who really struck a chord with the packed crowd.

After joking her way through a brief recap of her coming-out experience (“My big public moment was a big news item for about five minutes because ... I owe a major debt of gratitude to Tiger Woods”), Baxter moved on to talk about harassment in schools, "don't ask, don't tell," and the need for strong leaders to push gay rights forward.

Speaking of a young student in upstate New York who was ignored by school officials when students harassed him for being gay, Baxter said, “Students said that he ought to die, and one of his teachers told him that he ought to be ashamed. ... You have to ask, What kind of society creates these harassing students and these unsympathetic teachers? Our society. And when you look at some of the laws of our society, it’s not hard to see why.”

Baxter went on to say that laws like “don’t ask, don’t tell” are the government's message to students and teachers that it's OK to harass and discriminate.

Ms. Baxter, you are such a sweetheart...you are!!! Thank you so much, and yes, we are seeing the demise of DADT, one baby step at a time. I have been supporting HRC for years, and also ILGA, GayAsylum, Amnesty International and others, and I've just signed a petition drawn up by Anglican Canon Gideon that was presented to the Ugandan Government earlier today as an expression of opposition to the anti-gay bill which is presently in the Ugandan Parliament. I support Human Rights because Gay Rights are Human Rights, and I applaud Meredith along with the rest of you. Yea!!

queerbec if you read Bob Planks comment he says he was there which means he supports HRC and thus believe in what they tell him as to the state of gay issue in Washington, so My comments were accurate in their context as they are all sheep following HRC to the slaughter. My point is to get people who still support this worthless agency to wake up and stop giving their money and time to a org that isn't helping our issues....they could instead give it to one of the many who are truly try to fight for change.

Brandi: The three commentators were not praising HRC--or taking any position about the organization--they were saluting MBB's willingness to go public and speak up. It just so happens the venue was HRC's North Carolina dinner. They do not deserve such condemnation for commenting on MBB's remarks. (Yes, HRC has not met a lot of our expectations this year, but as a result it is up to us to take the political action necessary to make change happen in DC and at the local level. Complaining about HRC is not going to change the direction of the organization. )

I was in the audience when Meredith Baxter gave her speech Saturday night. What she had to say was very moving. Hearing Ms. Baxter speak made the evening for me. As a teen when Family Ties was originally aired, I have been a fan of her work for years. Now to have her add her voice to the cause of Equality as one of us is powerful. Thank you, Meredith Baxter, for coming to North Carolina to rally the troops.

It is so important to keep this fight up. I saw Meet The Press this morning and John McCain like he is an oracle for the country. He was saying that gays need to keep their mouths shut about being gay. There needs to be a study for at least a year. Then, depending on the study and how other military personel feel, changing DADT could be under consideration. There was no rebuttal to this shit. Keep lying and die if need be for this land of the free. What crap! I will pass on any program with McCain.

Wery well spoken Meredith, at 55 years old and just coming out myself, It's amazing to see how much bigotry and non- acceptance still exists.
