UC Davis LGBT Center Vandalized

UC Davis Graffiti (Screen grab) | Advocate.com

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center at the University of California, Davis, was vandalized with antigay messages in spray paint found Saturday morning.

According to CBS 13, the graffiti incident is the second involving hate messages to be investigated on campus in the past week. Earlier, a Jewish student found a swastika carved into her dorm room door, and racial tensions are running high due to an off-campus party that made use of urban stereotypes.

Staff of the center vowed to leave the graffiti up to demonstrate that hate still exists.

A letter from the center's staff on the door vowed to leave the graffiti up as a reminder that intolerance still exists. The center is holding a town hall meeting Monday evening to address the incidents.

And here's another peak into the kind of people running California: "Last week, several members of the California State Legislature called for the investigation and punishment of those students involved. Among the elected officials urging punishment for protected speech were Speaker-elect John A. Pérez, Speaker Karen Bass, and most of all Assemblymember Isadore Hall, III, who "want[s] names" and suspensions or expulsions. UCSD did not rule out punishment and has announced "aggressive investigations" into possible disciplinary violations." Now, you'll get no argument from me when it comes to vandalism, but if you're going to investigate students and expel them for having a politically incorrect party off campus, then you're dealing with fascism.

No Nazi regime? Let me quote from an article: ""The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and its student government have violated the First Amendment by freezing funds for 33 student media organizations, dissolving the student-run television station, and threatening to punish students involved in a controversy over a party invitation for an event called the "Compton Cookout." Student government president Utsav Gupta has explained that his repressive actions were due to "fracturing of the student body on an issue" and "hateful speech." Further, under pressure from state legislators who seek to punish protected speech, UCSD has launched "aggressive investigations" into the party invitation. After many students came to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) for help, FIRE has written two letters to UCSD defending the First Amendment both on and off campus." http://www.thefire.org/article/11597.html

"GAYS GO 2 HELL" loses what little impact it might have had when you crop it down. I think a photo of "FAGS" scrawled across the sign on the door would have captured the vandal's sentiment a little more accurately.

Seriously, what half-wit wrote this? The "off-campus" party referenced happened at UC San Diego, 500 miles (and a world) away.

Bobby, there is no Nazi regime. The school simply wants to expand discussion and information on the issues that cause prejudice driven vandalism. They want to talk at the town hall meeting for God's sake, one of the most democratic forms of policy making. The center even left the sign up as a reminder of intolerance in society. Seriously, you're feeding mouthfuls to the "Homosexual Agenda" fanatics.

D, the party was off-campus, if me and my friends want to have a party and make fun of anything, it's our right. If the blacks had decided to mock rednecks or republicans, would their be an outcry? Would the Campus Republicans be demanding their expulsion? I doubt it. What the administration needs to do is expel the troublemakers that are illegally occupying buildings. College is supposed to be an institution of learning, not some kind of nazi regime where anyone who doesn't fit with political correctness gets expelled. Besides, there's a big difference between vandalizing a building which IS a crime Vs. mocking Compton in a party which isn't a crime. In fact, SCOTUS ruled that burning a cross in your own private property is not a crime. Seriously, people in California are way over sensitive about everything.

Wow, I spent so many afternoons there during my time at UC Davis, it was one of the most welcoming places I'd ever been in my life. It's sad to see this has happened. I'm going to reach out to them and give my support.

you need to refine your website. I could not type in the comments section because there was no up and down symbol. Anyway, I'm typing without being able to see. I resent the word "queer"... I'm gay, I'm not different or abhorent.. I am a human being, and I deserve a little respect from you, and all those of you that want to use the word "QUEER" in any form of communication. Perhaps you don't think of yourself other than queer, but don't burden the rest of us with your problems. At least those that did the vandalism had the decency to use the word "GAY". over and out

Get your facts right! The off-campus party was held in San Diego, which sparked multiple protests at the University of California, SAN DIEGO. Students occupied the chancellors office to force the administration to do something. Several students who led the protest/occupation were Queer. This is something that affects all of us, not just LGBT People. We can't easily separate our identities. The LGBT community at UCSD are there protesting alongside the Black Student Union.
