Whitman on Gay Marriage, Adoption

California gubernatorial candidate and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman says that gays in her state should be allowed to adopt children but not legally marry.

Whitman, the top Republican in the race so far, said that she favored allowing gay couples to adopt because "many kids need a great home." However, when it came to marriage equality, she said the term "marriage" should apply only to heterosexual couples, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Equality California raised a red flag on Whitman in February, when the organization urged its supporters not to vote for her,due to her stance against gay marriage.

"She's trying to buy the governor's office with ads that fail to tell the true story about who she really is — an anti-equality candidate who has fought to eliminate the rights of LGBT people in an attempt to drum up conservative support to win an election," Equality California wrote in an e-mail to supporters.

Courage Campaign, a progressive statewide organization that lobbies for gay marriage, launched an ad campaign against Whitman last month. It also said that she falsely attempts to present herself as a moderate candidate and called her "California's Sarah Palin."

In the interview with the Mercury News, Whitman described herself as "extraordinary fiscal conservative" who is "moderate to conservative" on social issues.

In a Rasmussen poll released February 16, Whitman was tied in the governor's race with current attorney general Jerry Brown, who is seeking the Democratic nomination. Brown, who was California's governor from 1975 to 1983, had been posting a lead over Whitman until recently.

As attorney general, Brown argued against Proposition 8, which repealed marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

She is a homophobic woman who doesn't think that all humans deserve the same rights. Why should we vote a woman who holds social injustices as a platform on which to run? People like her will one day be looked on like those who discriminated against African Americans.

"they can adopt but not marry". So you set up a conservative, two committed parents and children structure but you refuse to call it what it is. How disappointingly weak.

She says the term "marriage" should apply only to heterosexual couples. I say the term "governor" should apply only to persons who believe in full equality for all the people of California.

He Hey, wait a minute. It makes no sense, sorry smarty pants Meg Whitman, to say gays should be banned from getting marriied! Excuse me, but don't straights marry gays, and straights marry bi's, and straights marry other straights, but gays can't marry other gays? It makes no sense at all! I guess she's only trying to keep all the fabulous gays to herself!

ttt, it matters because the California legislature passed the marriage bill TWICE -- once in 2005 and then in 2007 -- but Gov. Schwarzenegger decided he wanted the courts decide....blah blah blah, Prop 8. Thats why it matters.

Why does it matter what she thinks? Sure it matters from a moral standpoint (ie the governor should represent and protect the rights of all of her citizens in a just society), but from a legal standpoint it doesn't make much of a difference. I don't think the governor has any say in the matter any more now that the damn ban is in the constitution. It's not like the legislature can pass marriage equality for her to sign. Also, She wouldn't be able to do anything about another ballot initiative nor would she really be able to significantly affect the court's decision on the matter.
