Catholic Charities Drops D.C. Spouses From Health Plan

The social services agency Catholic Charities announced Monday that it was changing its health coverage to avoid offering benefits to same-sex partners in Washington, D.C. Weddings are scheduled to begin shortly for same-sex couples, whose right to marry was recognized by the D.C. council late last year.

The vote has sparked acrimony between officials and the Catholic archdiocese of Washington, with the change in health coverage being the most recent result, according to The Washington Post.

“Starting Tuesday, Catholic Charities will not offer benefits to spouses of new employees or to spouses of current employees who are not already enrolled in the plan. A letter describing the change in health benefits was e-mailed to employees Monday, two days before same-sex marriage will become legal in the District,” the Post reported.

According to the Post, staff members were not given advance notice of the new policy. One expert said that rather than dropping new spouses all together, another option would have been to expand the definition of domestic partner, as the archdiocese of San Francisco did.

Last month Catholic Charities transferred its foster care program to another provider as a result of its objections to the marriage equality law.

The agency receives $22 million from the city for its social service programs.

Control? That is the problem. Everyone wants to control everything they do not agree with. Churches have the right to decide their policies as they are private. There is no government control of a church because of separation. Let the Church close very school and social institution they manage and see how the government takes up the slack. It would be chaos incarnate. Thank God we have churches, catholic and protestant, that can care for people where the government can not.

Catholic "CHARITIES!" LOL! It has become as bigoted as the Westboro Baptist Church out of Topeka, Kansas. The R.C. Church, the original Religious Right, has shown itself to be as dangerous to the rights of Gay persons worldwide today as the Nazis were to the rights of Jews during the Third Reich.

Davvya, your post makes absolutely no sense. Sorry to say but the catholic church is a man made largely political and financial institution that makes money off of it's "charitable" work either through direct subsidies from the government or from the millions saved being a tax exempt organization. They are no more about providing spiritual solace than the wind that blows especially for gay people. Once again, I have no respect for gays and lesbians who continue to support this freak show. I also find it ironic that anyone who calls these idiots out is labeled "angry". It seems obvious to me that we have ample reasons to be angry with this institution. Do you really think it makes sense to remain part of an institution that says you are a member in good standing as long as you sacrifice your sexuality? Sorry, I think that is pure unadulterated evil. And yes we brought our kids up to be secular and questioning of any type of fairy tales.

If it hasn't been expressed here already, and it probably has, STOP GIVING THESE CHILD MOLESTING F*CKERS ANYMORE TAX MONEY! They get alot of tax money in NYC too. Enough already! There are others, including the homeless, who can do the job.

Thanks to Julie for reminding us through Mohatma Ghandi's wise words that the dark actions of these fools has nothing whatsoever in common with Christ. The ignorance, hatred, and suffering we are reading about here are the natural consequences of the ever-wrong direction taken by the church following its spiritually and morally-blind leader in vatican city. This sick soul who arrogantly elevates his own ego above all others by imposing his need-driven, personal will over the striving of countless others, and thereby causing untold human suffering, can not see his error, cannot see his own evil so deep is his darkness and so certain is his self-proclaimed righteousness. Or if he does see it, he is too sick to remember the way of truth and light taught by Jesus. May God in His mercy give that tortured soul respite from his personal demons! May God give this pope only a moment of clarity so that he see the pain he himself brings upon others, and in revulsion turns away from his evil acts.

Yes, great idea. Encourage people to leave the Catholic church and send droves to the evangelist nuts- ex-Catholics their primary converts. Come on, lets not be so naive as to assume there are no gay Catholics. The problem is that gay catholics in a long term committed, traditional relationship with children are toned down by the other gay couples, who may also have children, but are mostly agnostic and liberal, who generally support the ethics of open relationships. Gay Catholics, the only ones who would bother getting, gee, idk, CATHOLIC charities, should protest within the Church. Otherwise, the government in this country will never force the church into a government program.

The major difference of the Catholic Church in Canada is that they do not offer social services, only the government can offer those services. And the reason for this is of the abuses the Catholic Church and others have perpetuated against aboriginals and others. That is why they can't handle adpoptions without the government having the final say and approval. The government allows them to discriminate in their own operations but they cannot spill over into the public arena. They are not exempt from hate laws either by legislation or the court of public opinion. The Catholic Church especially is finding it difficult as people are getting tired of its antiquated rules and laws, especially when you read that the Church is the largest slum lord in the world, and you see the way that bishops, cardinals and the pope live and yet these men all took the vow of poverty, and in these times where social infrastructure could use the money that taxation could bring in.

If my tax law is correct, this would require them to include the money spent for premiums as income to the employee due to the fact that they are not providing the benefit to all employees - it falls into the line of the executives getting a membership to a golf club - since not everyone in the company gets tthe benefit, then it is a taxable benefit.

What does the Catholic Church do for Encores in places like, Catholic Spain, Catholic Canada, Catholic Portugal? In the USA, we can thank good old Sister Angelica, for promoting the hard conservative line in this country, just to curry favor with the Vatican. Until the Church opens up those windows and starts flushing away the stench, they will continue destroying that which they claim to love and uphold.
