Antigay California state senator Roy Ashburn was arrested on drunk driving charges early Wednesday morning after leaving a popular Sacramento gay bar with another man.

According to CBS 13, Ashburn, from Southern California, was pulled over by the state highway patrol at 2 a.m. because his black Chevy Tahoe was swerving.

“When the officer stopped the state-issued vehicle, the driver identified himself as Senator Ashburn,” reported CBS 13. “He was arrested without incident and charged with two misdemeanors: driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol level higher than .08% or higher.”

His unidentified male passenger was not detained. Ashburn was booked and released on $1,400 bond.

Ashburn, a father of four, has an antigay voting record that includes votes against a senate resolution to declare Proposition 8 unconstitutional and three votes against the creation of Harvey Milk Day.

The senator released a statement reported by CBS 13:

"I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me — my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate."

Bobby from Miami - I can't tell from your post if you were being sarcastic or not; but as far as Republicans not cheating on their taxes, that was a laugh and a half.

This pig needs to be drawn and quartered. The epitome of a self hating closet queen. A drunkard and a coward. This is why I seldom go to my local gay bar- you find these losers there. They need booze to have the guts to suck cock. Yet they sit there pontificating on every issue. If you are not man enough to be who you are, and even vote against gay rights, you earn the contempt of other gay people. Rot in hell, you pig! From the looks of him, he must have offered the one he picked up alot of money. I can tell you that whenever I meet someone who is in the closet, I tell everyone they are gay.

He's innocent until proven guilty in a court of public opinion. Sheesh. I know... I'll vote against gay people so nobody will ever suspect I'm one. BTW: What does he have a state vehicle?

Well, well...another republican anti gay politician gets caught with his pants down - well not exactly, but you know what I mean. Haven't the recent shenanigans of Mark Foley, Larry Craig and others taught these guys anything? There is nothing wrong with being gay, and everyone is capable of making mistakes (his DUI), but his past record of voting against every gay rights legislation is inexcusable and hard to forgive.

Corvo: The primary thesis of Tearoom Trade was the incongruence between the private self and the social self of men like Ashburn, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Ted Haggard, Jim Bakker, et al. Humphreys tapped into a theme of incongruence between one's words and deeds that has become a primary methodological and theoretical concern in sociology throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Ashburn has shown that Humphrey's assertions are just as true today as they were in the 1970s.
