Gays in Antigay States Prone to Depression

MISSISSIPPI GODDAM X390 (FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Gays and lesbians who live in states that ban same-sex marriage — such as Mississippi — are more likely to suffer from alcoholism, mood disorders, or anxiety, according to a study by the American Public Health Association.

Researchers report that gay people who live in states prohibiting legal recognition for same-sex couples are 248.2% more likely to experience general anxiety than those in states without such bans. Residents of antigay states are also 41.9% more likely to suffer from alcoholism, 36.6% more likely to have a mood disorder, and 36.3% more likely to have psychiatric comorbidity, or simultaneous presence of two disorders.

The antigay policies do not seem to affect heterosexual people, the researchers noted.

The full study can be found in the American Journal of Public Health.

"If anyone needs an example of how LGBT are marginalized in this country; just look at AIDS." Well, didn't you know sweetie? They only spend the money on the REAL Americans. I read that they (Reagan) spent more money on f*cking Legionaire's Disease in the first 6 months than they spent for AIDS research in the first 7 YEARS of the epidemic. But then, Legionaire's Disease was killing all the wrong people. At times, I'm surprised that ANY lgbtq person would willingly join the military and fight for this country.

If anyone needs an example of how LGBT are marginalized in this country; just look at AIDS. If THAT had been a disease which primarily affected white, middle-class, heterosexual men; there would have been a CURE for it in less than a year! It's 'OK' to put down LGBT people, because to too many of our countrymen; we simply don't matter.

This isn't news to anyone who has graduated from high school, but I appreciate that somebody has taken the time to put it into hard figures. And if anyone thinks that Christians and other religious zealots are the one and only "enemy" to gay rights, check out Japan, the most un-religious country in the world (according to several studies and surveys). It is cultural pressure/bias and patriarchism that put LGBT people down. There are no laws against sexual minorities in Japan, and anyone can serve in the military (or as we call it, Self Defense Force), so why is most everybody still in the closet? Most straight people here are sure that they know no gay people. Gays are not treated with violence, but merely an extremely cold shoulder.

Not only do the Hets know what this day to day hell of a life does to us and our souls, not only do they know, they don't care. There is a segment of the population that has been spoon fed hatred and fear from birth and they are glad that you hurt, glad that you cry, glad that you lose hope. Don't Let the Bitches get you down. Remember in many ways we are superior. We see both sides of a coin, know out strengths and what it means to go it alone and what it means to have family that isn't blood kin. Never let them win! Never stop fighting.

Studies like this are hugely beneficial because they give us hard statistics that we and our allies can use in the fight for equality. It's no longer our word against the evangelicals. I hope this gets a lot of media coverage. This is why we're winning in the court of public opinion: the facts are on our side. I would like to see further analysis that considers several forms of discrimination towards us, because states that discriminate in one way often discriminate in others. Incidentally, it isn't all Christians who are our enemies, it's the evangelicals. Mainstream Christians favor our rights by sizeable majorities.
